I was wondering - if I have a MCE Dimension + MCE install CD, then can I install it on my friend's non-Dell PC, along with the remote and the TV tuner? And then of course delete the MCE from the Dimension and Install my friend's retail XP Pro on the new Dimension.
Yeah, I had a feeling that either MS or Dell would limit it...
What they said earlier was about the retail version.
But while at it, do you know what is the limit for component modifications allowed? Is it a number of different components removed? Or maybe the mobo must stay?
I have some changes in mind, and I wish to avoid killing my OS...
No, your copy of MCE is an EOM copy and is licensed for use only on the computer with which it was sold. You can install your friend's retail copy of XP on your system if it has been uninstalled from the computer it is presently on.
I'm aware that microsoft won't allow moving too much between hardware, but as I recall, when XP was announced Microsoft said that XP could be moved once to a new machine, and after that only by phone request. Has this changed? Is it any different with MCE? / OEM versions?
The Microsoft policy has never changed. OEM copies of operating systems are licensed for use only on the computer with which they are sold. The pertinent portion of the End User License Agreement states:
THIS LICENSE MAY NOT BE SHARED, TRANSFERRED TO OR USED CONCURRENTLY ON DIFFERENT COMPUTERS. The SOFTWARE is licensed with the HARDWARE as a single integrated product and may only be used with the HARDWARE.
The mobo must stay because if it is changed you no longer have a Dell computer. For the nitty-gritty details of modifications see the information under
Technical Activation Detailshere.
