Start up problem

I have seen this problem discussed on here, but I am not a computer wiz, so most of the solutions I read are over my head. I'm a fast learner though. So, if someone feels like talking down to my level, I would really appreciate any help. My system says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM   You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I figured out how to get the system to use the CD Drive to boot up. I was able to get to the repair screen and press 'r', and that's where I become clueless. what do I do from here?

    johnmr12,

I just saw your other post indicating how new the computer was and was on my way back to my post to edit it and suggest that reinstalling XP would probably be easier than trying to recover the registry, but you already got there.

I tried that, but I couldn't get it to work. So, I just reinstalled my operating system. I had only used the computer a couple of times, so I really didn't have any important stuff on there.

    johnmr12,

You need to get to the Recovery Console (see this) and once you are there follow the procedures here.
