unmountable boot volume?

Last night I downloaded the newest version of I-Tunes 5.0 to upgrade my current 4.9. Also quicktime came with the upgrade.
Now the message error comes up "unmountable boot volume"

and I cannot even access the computer to remove the newest version which I am assuming is the culprit since it worked before that.
I can't even start it in a safe mode as when I try it shuts down to the error message as before. I cannot even restart it in the previous settings offered under F8.

I found this for trouble shooting.
SYMPTOMS
When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume".
CAUSE
1.The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.
2.You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
3.The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.
RESOLUTION
If it be the connector cable problem then replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable.
If it's a BIOS settings problem then  load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support.

If it's a damaged file system case then:-
1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

5.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.

6.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

I don't believe it is a cable as it all worked last night.

The XP CD won't even start up.

Dell wants to charge me 99 cents a minute to ask them by phone.

So if anyone has a suggestion....I am all ears...I love my Dell.

    Hi,

I think you need to follow the instructions using the Recovery Console to fix this.

    CD problem

Did you go into BIOS and change the boot order to

    1 Floppy

    2 CD ROM

    3 Hard Drive

If you have done this, try cleaning the CD

    Hi thanks for repsonding.

I did what you told me and the XP CD tries to load all the set up files and all I want is the recovery console...I don't have a floppy disk for recovery...just the Original CD's that came with my Dimension 4600.

Do I want to load all the files to find the recovery console...I hit the R key when prompted and it does nothing.

    Hi,

Yes.  When the CD boots up it starts just as if you were going to reinstall  (it loads all the set up files)
So let it load them all and then you will get a screen with an "R" option.
This is the one you want, the Recovery Console
Be sure to follow the XP instructions here

Hi again and THANKS>>>>> I went ahead and did it in the mean time.

I followed the commands of the computer and typed in CHKDSK...there were errors found and then I did a FIXBBOOT.

Finally the computer let me start up in a safe mode and then start up as usual. HURRAH!!

I immediately went to delete the quicktime and am debating about the itunes version 5 I downloaded as it is working now.

I see Janedoe crashed after downloading the same itunes version..altleast she could access her computer.

I am thankful for all of you and have learned so much...I ususally troubleshoot ok on my own..this one really had be baffled.

One more ? before I let you go...should I go back to reset my boot sequence to

Floppy---CD---Harddrive as I had to change it to CD first to get the XP to start up?

    Thanks again.

    Well Done :smileyhappy:

Make the boot up order Floppy, CD, then HD

You need to keep the floppy first in case you ever need to use a boot up floppy to access the CD

    You are very welcome :smileyhappy:

You don`t get supplied with a boot up floppy.

People usually just go to the download site and make one if it is needed.
