Vista Installation Error

Hello all,

While installing vista, everything seems to go fine until it's copying files. During this time i get "an error occured during installation. installation failed." I really wish it would give me more information, because it's a REAL pain trying to figure out what's going wrong when it doesn't tell you!

i downloaded the readiness advisor...and all it did was tell me my system specs were OK for vista. thanks.

I have an XPS 400, 3Ghz Pentium D, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 6800FX

i can provide any other information you need, but as i'm guessing..you're as clueless as to what's going wrong as i am.

oh...i chose the upgrade installation, as i don't want to have to obtain all my files all over again..that would take a year!!

PLEASE let me know how i can help you help me..customer support is no help at all!

just tried again and same thing.

to be more specific, the error occurs during the "gathering files" phase.

You need the files for those drives from the Drivers and Downloads Section to the left.  Download them to a floppy and Hit F6 when prompted during the install process.

    thanks for the reply!

the drivers and download section is pretty deep...and i really don't quite know what SCSI/RAID host controllers are..and i don't see anything within the drivers and downloads section that says SCSI/RAID, so i don't know what to download. a little more specific please?

    5. From the Device Manager, look for an entry named
    'SCSI and RAID Controllers'.
If this entry is present, expand it and look for one of
    the following controllers:

    - 'Intel(R) 82801HR/HH/HO SATA RAID Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is
an ICH8R system in RAID mode and no further action
    is required

    - 'Intel(R) 631xESB/632xESB SATA RAID Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is
an ESB2 system in RAID mode and no further action
    is required

    - 'Intel(R) 82801GHM SATA RAID Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is
an ICH7MR system in RAID mode and no further action
    is required

    - 'Intel(R) 82801GR SATA RAID Controller'
If the Controller above is present, the system is
an ICH7R system in RAID mode and no further action
    is required.

    - 'Intel(R) 82801GH SATA RAID Controller'
If the Controller above is present, the system is
an ICH7DH system in RAID mode and no further action
    is required.

    - 'Intel(R) 82801FR SATA RAID Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is
an ICH6R system in RAID mode and no further action
    is required.

    - If neither of the controllers above are shown,
then the system is not running in RAID mode and
you should continue with step 6 below.

    mine only says:

    SCSI/RAID Host Controller

no serial numbers or anything...so i continue?

    i find both of these:

    - 'Intel(R) 82801GR SATA AHCI Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is
an ICH7R system in AHCI mode and no further action
    is required.

    - 'Intel(R) 82801GH SATA AHCI Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is
an ICH7DH system in AHCI mode and no further action
    is required.

i don't really know what that means, but i'm taking no further action..

i read on to find that i should do the F6 method you said earlier...but my problem is that i have no floppy drive..........

    please advise

under the Serial ATA section? I don't really know which drivers you're talking about.

i just don't know what i'm looking for.

    i've got a terabyte..

i don't really know what i'm talking about, i'm just repeating things the computer is telling me.
