The Dell Upgrade Assistant disk ships with the Win 7 upgrade disk from Dell.

Only if Dell has the Win 7 drivers for your system. If not it will not work.

There is no bios release in the works for this system to support win7 at this time.

I did run the WIN 7 Upgrade Advisor and it shows my INSPIRON 1501 is OK for WIN 7.

Does the DELL Upgrade help with the custom install?

Thanks for the reply. I already have the MS WIN 7 upgrade disk which I bought earlier this year at half price.

How do I get the DELL Upgrade Assistant?

My INSPIRON 1501 isn't listed on the DELL site as checked for WIN 7, yet the MS Win 7 Upgrade Advisor shows it is OK.

The Dell Upgrade Assistant typically ships as part of the Dell Windows 7 upgrade kit.  I don't think the disc can be ordered separately, but will check and post the results here.

My question might be a little out of context here.

I recently upgraded an Inspiron 531 from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 (not through dell upgrade since my computer was bought almost 2 years ago).  The upgrade went fine, that is no hiccups or anything and I love Windows 7 but the only thing is that I have an unknown device in the device manager.  The Windows 7 solution said something about "away mode" in the bios is not supported in 64 bit.  To try to disable it in the BIOS.  Well, I could not find that option in trhe BIOS anywhere. I tried to update the BIOS with the latest version for my system form the Dell downloads page but the .exe BIOS update does not run in Windows 7.  Is there a way Dell can give us a hand here, whether its by providing a BIOS updater that runs on Windows 7 or a way to update the BIOS not in windows?

Did you do the custom install or upgrade?

I added an addition 1 gb of RAM 2 years ago, so I've got 2 gb (the limit for this machine). My 1501 came with VISTA Home Premium.

Vista and Windows 7 share the same driver model. So broadly if your system supports vista it should support Win7 also. You can use the vista drivers in the windows 7. Win7 RAM req is 1GB. If you got that then mostly all things should work fine.

I am myself using Win7 ultimate on Inspiron 640M which is close to 3 year old and came with vista home basic. I am just using Vista drivers and things are perfect. At best you can use the intel chipset driver update from intel for the motherboard of your comp.
