I'm just kind of curious and I hope it's just not me but I'll ask anyway. So I have this nice new Dell Studio XPS 9100 and I bought it with Win7 Ultimate edition. I have the box and I have the media (the media that came from Dell). I've rebuilt my system once with no issues. I understand that I don't need a key since i'm installing it on a Dell system BUT what happens if in the future something happens to the Dell machine and I can no longer use it or want to use? I mean what if I build a system or buy a machine that is not a Dell? I can't reinstall my Win7 Ultimate on that machine without a Key right? So why did I buy the Win7 from Dell then? Maybe I save a few bucks by getting the OEM version but I want the Key. How do I get the Key? Am I entitled to a key since I bought Win7 Ultimate with my system?
You have the key ... it is on a sticker on the side of your computer. This key is an OEM key and can only be used to activate Windows when installed using the Dell OEM DVD - and (per EULA) can only be used on the computer it came with. In order to install Windows on any computer, you would need a Retail version of Windows, which is not tied to a specific machine. The is a "feature cost" of getting OEM software. OEM software is substantially discounted, but for that, you give up some flexibility in its use. Don't kick yourself for buying OEM from Dell ... you can't buy a computer from Dell without an OEM OS.
Excellent thank you :) I'll check when I get home this evening. The "funny" thing is that when I was chatting with Dell support last week about another resolved issue, the tech said something to the effect not to worry about not having the key because I would not need the key since I would reinstall it on the Dell machine. Yes that is true but that's not what I asked :) So in the end he told me there was no key to be had but I will look for the number on the sticker tonight. Again, thank you.
If your hard drive fails or you want to replace your drive and you need to install Windows on a new drive, you will need the key. It's wise to make several copies of that sticker and keep one with your windows disk. I always print out a copy and tape it to the computer. The sticker is very small and hard to read and can be damaged and become unreadable.
