I have an Inspiron 2650 that I'd like to install Windows 7 RC1 on. I've been running it in a VM and want to put it on actual hardware but this is the only machine I have to "play with" so to speak. So though I know this is an old model, it's all I have to work with.
I ran the compatibility test for Windows 7 and the only thing I'm stumped on is a driver for the 3Com 3C920 network card. I've searched and come up empty handed for a driver for this built-in NIC for either Windows 7 or Vista.
Am I just out of luck or have I missed finding a compatible driver? As I said, the Windows 7 Compatibility Test showed some problems to fix before installing, but this is the only show stopper. I can take care of all the other ones the text found.
Any idea what I can do then? I would try the 3Com site, but I thought that drivers direct from the H/W manufacturers sites was not an option when it comes to laptops, that all drivers have to come from Dell. If I can indeed get drivers directly from 3Com, let me know and I'll inquire about this over there.
I found the answer on another website. I downloaded and installed the driver file 3c90x1.exe which is supposed to be Vista compatible. Windows 7 recognized it and used it. I was then able to get online and go to Windows Update where a network driver update was found. So I installed it and everything has been working just fine.
