WindowsXP Disk Defragmenter

Using WindowsXP Home Edition/SP2.

When I run WindowsXP System Tool Disk Defrag on my C:\ drive (where OS is installed) I get the message "Defrag Complete" \ "Some files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the Defragmentation Report for the list of these files"

When I click on the REPORT, under "Files that did not Defragment" I see NO files listed.

I have 2 Internal drives, the other drive just holds data (H:\). When I run Disk Defrag on the H:\drive, the results are; "Defragmentation Completed Successfully" which support the problem is not with the Disk Defragmenter.

Things I have done: (1) I have run Defrag several times (2) Have run Defrag in SAFE MODE (3) Have run the WindowsXP tool "Error Checking.....correct error automatically" (4) downloaded and ran Auslogics Disk Defrag ver 1.3.

None of the above action has corrected the problem, I still get the message after running Disk Defrag on my C:\...some files on this volume could not be Defragmented.....etc

How do I correct this and get all files on my C:\ drive defragmented.

It's rare that all files (especially on the OS partition) will be completely defragmented. The files which don't defrag completely are most likely a hibernation file, system restore files or the swap file. I don't think it's worth worrying about.

Defrag needs at least 15% of your hard drive as free space to work.Do you have the minimum fre space?

Try some cleaning, such as deleting tif's.Install ccleaner.I use the slim build version.

After using ccleaner, reboot and try defrag again.

I'm not sure if chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r will do anything.

Thanks......   My PC is 6 years old.....and up until this last Time I ran Disk Defragmenter....it always finished as DEFRAGMENTATION SUCESSFULLY COMPLETED.  And the message about some files on volume could not be Defragmented never appeared. I have a second Internal Hard drive in my PC, it holds data only.  I decided to run Defrag on it to see on completion what the message would read (to rule out the some files could not be defrag.....as perhaps a problem with Defrag itself); it ran fine and showed DEFRGAMENTATION COMPLETELY SUCESSFULLY.  So Defra is running correctly and completing showing a correct message.  I have not added any Software or made any changes to my PC.......during this time period.

My drive has 56% free space.  I followed your instructions, downloaded and run software, same results...some files could not be defragmented..........

I downloaded Auslogics Disk Defrag ver 1.3 as directed by a Dell tech Support person.  I have run the software several times and even it shows files not Defragged.  What Defrag Software are you using......and can it be gotten off the Internet?

Possibly your MFT has grown and fragmented since your last defrag. Or some other system files have fragmented. The XP defrag tool doesnt defrag many system files; for this you need a third party defragger. But I gave up on manual defrag a while ago...simply a waste of my time. I personally use an automatic defragmenter which runs in the background without consuming much system resources, yet defrags automatically as required. More convenient and effective compared to the outdated manual defragmenters.
