Hi - I need to be able to change the administrator name in XP to another name. When I tried to do that it does not seem to make the changes globally, as I cannot make any further changes when I sign-in using the new user name.

What can't you change when you sign-in with new Administrator name.?
Also check "User Accounts" that your account is shown as "Computer/Administrator".
Perhaps you created a New Account instead of clicking on old account & then "Change name".?

I can't perform adminitsrator functions, nor can I log into the network (even though that user name being used is on the server)
Now if I create a new user and give them supposedly complete administrator functions, this user, cannot install new programs run updates or anything of the major administrator functions. It is as if they are power users.
You said: "Perhaps you created a New Account instead of clicking on old account & then "Change name"
I did, no luck.
This is happening on x2 of the Dell machines I purchased, the other one I changed the administrator name when setting-up the machine and have no problem with that one
(1) You wrote: " You said the above , so how did you create other Computer/Administrator accounts if you "Cannot make any further changes". ?"
Reply: I created all user names first when I originally had the administrator name.
(2) No is shows with the new name, but does not give me full administrator rights, it gives me the equivalent to a power user.
(3) I am using XP Pro
(4) We are constantly running Norton Anti-Virus
(5) Ironically - the only administration function I can perform is to chnge the name back to Administrator, and then I can do everything an administrator can.
As I mentioned before, I have x2 Dell Machines like this, the 3rd Dell Machine, when I setup I changed Administrator to another user name, That (a) gives fewer problems, and (b) logs into the network a whole lot faster than the other 2.
Strange I thought you couldn't change account named "Administrator". The "Administrator" account should be the Default "Administrator" account , this isn't your Computer/Administrator account you setup. XP also has a default "Administrator" account which during XP Install you have the option to set a password for the default "Administrator" account. If this was the default "Administrator" account you shouldn't have changed its name , although don't know why it allowed this. ? It also should prevent you as a Computer/Administrator from creating another account named "Administrator". ----------------- Can only think of checking HKEY with regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa nodefaultadministrator DWORD ..............(1)
The default value should be 1 , if 0 XP may assign some ownerships of system files to Default "Administrator" account only.
You may have top Logon in normal mode as Default Administrator to change this if set to 0. But if you have set your account to name "Administrator" shouldn't have to. To Logon as Default Administrator press Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys together twice at Logon screen. User ID Administrator & Password blank unless you set one during XP install. ----------------- With "Administrator" or "Computer/Administrator" account press Windows+R & type control userpasswords2 then click OK or press "Enter" key This will show the Default Administrator account first on list & all accounts setup on Computer. Click "Cancel" after viewing list.
If you don't setup a Computer/Administrator account during XP install it usually auto creates an account called "Owner" as "Computer/Administrator" account. --------------- Edit: I have XP Pro & it usually doesn't show Default "Administrator" account in "User Accounts" or "Welcome Screen". I checked my XP Pro & I set registry show show default "Administrator" account in "User Accounts" & then clicked on default "Administrator" account & it didn't show option to change account name. So unless you setup account called "Administrator" & misspelled account name of "Administrator" it shouldn't have allowed you to setup another account called "Administrator". Perhaps its a bug of XP install. ?
If the account if the Default "Administrator" & you don't want it to show on "Welcome Screen" or "User Accounts" list you can edit registry HKEY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList Administrator DWORD ...............(0)
Also if you don't want a Default "Administrator" account password & you set one during XP install & the Default "Administrator" account is still showing in "User Accounts" list , you can change to no password there. Or if not showing & you Logs on as a "Computer/Administrator" , not the Default "Administrator" just press Windows+R keys together & type control userpasswords2 then click OK or press "Enter" key with "Users must enter......." ticked & the Default "Administrator" account selected click on "Reset Password" don't enter a password , OK then click on "Cancel" of main screen.

You said the above , so how did you create other Computer/Administrator accounts if you "Cannot make any further changes". ?
If assume the account you changed the name of still shows as a Computer/Administrator account. ?
Do you have XP Home or XP Pro. ?
If your Computer/Administrator account allows , you could try changing name back to original account name. ----------------- Never struck this problem so can only suggest you try a Windows Repair from boot of XP CD. This will leave Data intact but you will have to download the Windows Updates again including SP1a unless XP CD label shows it contains SP1. Not the first R for Recovery Console but start new installation by pressing "Enter" key then select R from later screen. Be sure to enable XP Firewall before connecting to Internet to protect from Blaster Worm. ------------------ You could also scan Computer for a Virus but first update Virus database if account allows it.
