Deadspace on screen

I am using an iPad 2. When I view my desktop with the iPad turned horizontally, about 1/3 of the screen is not used - making the resolution worse. The program I am mainly using is best viewed in this horizontal orientation. Please help me understand how to fix this. Thanks
