Go to SolutionXPS 8940, running two monitors
Hi, I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me how to set up two monitors with the XPS 8940, if that’s possible. The two monitors I bought are HDMI connections but there is only a single HDMI out port on the XPS 8940. I don’t want both monitors to show the same output but need to extend the desktop across both. I have read that getting a two into one HDMI lead won’t cut it as that will just send the same signal to both monitors. If that’s the case, what other options might I have with using the DisplayPort option or even one of the USBs. Alternatively, would it be easier to buy two new monitors with DisplayPort connections to achieve the two screen setup?

@amj99 Now that we know you have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER graphics card, we can offer some other solutions. The GTX 1650 has one DP 1.4 port, one HDMI 2.0 port, and one Dual-Link DVI port. Here are some other options:
1. Monitor #1 - connected to graphic card HDMI port via HDMI cable, Monitor #2 - connected to Intel integrated graphics via HDMI cable. Pro - no need for an adapter cable. See the XPS 8940 Setup and Specifications to find where the integrated ports are located on the back panel.
2. Monitor #1 - connected to graphics card HDMI port via HDMI cable. Monitor $2 - connected to graphics card DVI port via DVI to HDMI adapter cable. Pro - I think a DVI adapter cable is less problematic than a DP adapter cable, as @John-Jay mentioned a DP to HDMI adapter may be unidirectional, in some cases you may need an active cable.

Yes using 2 monitors on different outputs will work (although, potentially, will not necessary be of the same standard) - certainly I experimented with that configuration on my XPS 8930.
However, if you have 2 off DisplayPorts, why not use 2 off adapters?
Incidentally, DisplayPort Adadpters/Cables are single direction - hence you will need "DisplayPort to HDMI" & NOT "HDMI to DisplayPort"!!
Thanks again for your advice. I only have one DisplayPort and one HDMI port. I know using an HDMI splitter will only mirror the output to another monitor, hence I was needing some advice on whether the DisplayPort will allow me to extend the desktop. From what you are saying this can be done? If so, I will order a DisplayPort to HDMI converter cable and hopefully that will do it?

Sorry, but I don't know what Graphic outputs you have available on your Graphics Card!
However, if you have 2 DisplayPorts, then simply get 2 off DisplayPort to HDMI Leads to connect to your HDMI Monitors!
This is the configuration that I used on my XPS 8930 - hence I'm assuming that it will work on a XPS 8940!

Buy a display port to HDMI adapter cable. I had to do something similar on my old computer with a DVI to HDMI adapter (worked perfectly).
