I hear a noise that sounds like an hard drive thrashing on occasion. I installed a 250 gig solid state drive in it back in 2018 instead of the original 1TB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive which went bad.
The other drive is the 32GB mSATA Solid State Drive. Not even sure what that drive does ?
How can a solid state drive sound like the SATA drive thrashing ?. I know what one sounds like when going bad but the SATA has been removed like I mentioned.
No, I was at one time a computer tech. I know what a hard drive sounds like that is going out or the system is low on ram. It sounds like a HD thrashing. Now all the time but when it does make the sound its loud. Its not a high pitch buzz
If there are no hard drives, only SSDs, then what you describe could be a fan going bad. As that is an eight- or nine-year-old laptop, the fan could be dirty, causing it to work harder. A fan bearing could be slightly worn, causing noise.
If it were my laptop, I would open it up to check the fan and do a cleaning. You can find step-by-step disassembly/assembly instructions in the Dell manual.
I had this laptop apart a few months ago . I put new heat sink compound on the CPU and the fan ran great then. It could be a fan . I will research more. Thanks
