Very Important - Windows XP User Password

Hey,

Apparently I had a password before or something, and it somehow reactivated. I do not know what the password is and it comes up at the start up of the computer. How can I get around this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you can logon as an Administrator at all (if lost password is for a "limited user" and not the administrator), try going into Control Panel's User Accounts and "remove password" for the account.

If it's the Administrator account password you could boot to the XP CD and do a repair reinstall (not Recovery Console), then run the User Account control panel and change it. Get there by using the file name  nusrmgr.cpl  entered at a command prompt (Shift+F10 should bring that up). First thing though, wait for a reboot of the reinstallation procedure before continuing with the user accounts part, which you'll do during device setup after the reboot. The reinstall leaves programs intact, if all goes well.

Might be other ways, but these I know of (a little).

Hey, take a look at this MSKB article I just found concerning it. Might be some risk involved.

Oh, and maybe I really ought to emphasize that you never want to repartition and reformat your computer unless there are no more alternatives. "Repair Reinstall" is not a complete fresh setup but be sure to select the appropriate choice when asked to avoid the misery of losing data. Here's a web link telling about the steps it takes, so if you aren't sure of yourself please read it.

Hey, could you please be more specific, apparently I did something wrong. It just re-installed XP Home, didn't do anything to passwords.

I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a shot. Go to "Command Prompt" (located in accessories). Then type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes). Now on the window that shows up, you should see all the user accounts on the computer. Click the one you want to reset and click the button "Reset Password...". I'm pretty sure this will work. Could you please leave feedback on this? I'm interested in knowing if it works or not.
