show window contents while dragging

When I right-click My Computer, then click; properties- performance - advanced, and then set (check), "Show window contents while dragging, windows only saves that setting for the current session. Once the computer is shut down and or restarted, the option is set back to being unchecked and window contents are no longer displayed when dragging. I have tried to save this change now at least 15 times and the change will not be saved on next startup. And yes, I did click apply and then ok after making the change.

Anyone ever experienced this before and if so, what is causing this and how can it be corrected, please? Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this very annoying problem.

Computer is;

New Dell XPS_GEN_2

Windows XP Pro

Intel 875P chipset

3.2 GHz Pentium 4

1 GB DDR

ATI 9800 PRO

Borabora, I have the RAID drive setup as well (the Striping configuration). There is a Promise driver diskette you need - dig around in your shipping boxes and you will find it, along with another CD and the RAID controller manual. You need that diskette for the Win XP clean setup. You can delete and recreate RAID arrays if you follow the (excellent) instructions in the manual. If you can't find any of that stuff, you can download most of it (drivers etc) from the Promise Tech web site - www.promise.com. Look at your Dell invoice to see exactly what RAID card you are using...

But look thru the shipping box first. I didn't find it until I rummaged thru a second time.

Alan, what is that customer care number you used? I am Nick who you have been in contact with on the MS newsgroup.

Thanks, Bora Bora

Hello All,

I have had the same problem with my brand new Dell XPS.  I decided that I would do a clean installation by saving all my files with the file settings and transfer wizard (works okay but is far from perfect) and then a hard drive reformat and OS reinstall.

Everything was fine until I installed "Dell Media Experience" this morning.  Then the problem re-appeared.  I removed "Dell Media Experience" from my PC and now everything is fine again.

Try removing this software, rebooting, and see if that cures your problem.  Please let me know what happens.  If this cures the problem for a number of people we can let Dell know about their software problem.  I'm going to let Dell Support know about this anyway.

Good Luck,
Ralph

Eureka! Just un-installed the Dell Media Experience, rebooted and the settings are retained. Problem solved! Unbelievable! Not only is this a simple fix but it is totally Dell's fault with their choice on including Dell Media Center (a product of little utility.)

Thanks so much for figuring this out and letting us know! (I wish Dell was as helpful...)

Well, it *did* fix the show window contents when dragging error - but the sound icon still won't "stay" in the system tray. At least the other 2 problems (System32 window showing at startup and the dragging issue) have now been debugged. Be grateful for small favors, I suppose.

Dell - how about getting to the bottom of this and/or at least getting your software rewritten?

Well.. I got the replacement Dim 8300 box yesterday. Hooked it up this morning and guess what?

Exact same problems as before, clean out of the box:

- no sound icon in system tray (settings won't "stick")

- windows contents when dragging won't stay on (but I have no deleteed Media Experience)

- System32 window not initially visible at startup, but then appears after I connect to my home network.

I'm now torn. Can I live with these bugs, or should I ship the whole lot back to Dell as a lesson?

Ralph,

Great job! I have been out of town the last seven days and just now got the message. Did the un-install of that program and a four-week old problem is no more. Looks like to me that Dell needs to send you some big time cash. Not one person on their payroll had a clue on this and you fixed it form them. Good work and thanks...

There's something in the Dell Audigy 2 software configuration that won't let the volume icon "stick" in the task pane. I ditched the OEM version (see Audio for various reasons why) and installed a retail Audigy 2 ZS (which kicks!!) Both volume controls are now present everytime on boot-up. While not a great solution, perhaps it isolates the problem.

Just another confirmation. I ordered a Dell Dimension 4600 and received it on monday 1/26/2004. Right out of the box, the "Show window contents while dragging" setting was not sticking.

After a brief search on the internet, I discovered this forum. Lo and Behold, after uninstalling the Dell Media Experience, The setting now sticks.

Add me to this list..

ive been having the same problem, but heres what  ive done, seems to of worked for me.

i havent uninstalled Dell Media experience. instead, go to the start menu, and select "run..." type in msconfig and hit the enter button. on the System Configuration Utility, select the "Startup" tab. UNSELECT "PCMSerivce" (the command is "C:\program files\dell\media experiance\pcmservice.exe") than click on the "OK" button. A little box will pop-up asking you to either restart or restart later, make either choice. Log off the screen name, and when you log back on, the "show window contents while dragging" will stay on. If not, reselect the option "show window contents" option, log bacl off user, log back on. if that doesnt solve it, i dont know, just uninstall it.

System Info:
Dimension 4600i Pentium 4 2.6GHz Hyper-Threaded 800-MHz FSB, 512 RAM, 40GB Maxtor 6E040L0 IDE Hard Drive, Windows XP Home SP1, DVD-ROM (16x), 3.5inch floppy drive (impressive, lol), Integrated Video, Integrated Sound, 56K Fax modem, Intel 10/100 PRO Network (Integrated), Norton Internet Security 2004, and a lot of other boring stuff, like my M782 flat-screen monitor (on #2 btw) that isnt right.

To All,

I just inherited this board, so forgive the late response.
The Dell Media Experience software automatically disables the "Show windows content..." option because having that option enabled could cause video corruption.
So, when you have the DME software installed, that option will be disabled by default.
You can try stopping the DME software in MSCONFIG like "JMK" suggested, or you can simply
uninstall the DME software.
The "Show Window Contents While Dragging" option has been shown to cause video corruption on various systems depending on what other software or hardware may be installed.
That is the reason it was decided to disable this option when using the DME software.
