better wi fi reception for X300?

Does anybody know of anything I can use in order to have better reception while using my X300 in public wi-fi areas?
I was wondering if there is a possibility of adding anything like an antenna to my computer, which could do the trick. Does anyone know of such devices? Which ones?
I also wondered whether adding a PCMCIA, or any other wireless card fit to my X300, will be better than the built-in dell hardware (especially that some of them come with little antennas).
Thank you for any advice.

they make wireless relays but those are more for business application that open network apps. they are just boxes you sit around the office and they reinterpret the signal. your situation is a bit different, i think there is an option to set the network card to look for a long preamble signal, sorry my info is a bit vague but my experience in wireless is a bit limited by my enviroment. (lol, not a road warrior)
