Have you checked the modem vendor?  That would be a good place to go.  Although it may have been "fixed" in SP2, many vendors had to update their software to be 100% SP2 compatible.  May be that Dlink has some update drivers.

BTW, the USB connection for a broadband modem is the least desireable.  If you have an Ethernet connection ("NIC") with the RJ-45 connection that is the preferred connection.  Using the Ethernet connection does not require any special software drivers to interface to an external broandband modem.

Yes, I checked the modem vendor's Web site and downloaded the driver direct from there. It's the same version as that supplied by my ISP, and had the same problem.

I also installed, from this website, updated chip-set drivers which are meant to provide increased USB stability, but that also failed to cure the crash.

I know that ethernet router is the "way to go", but I don't have one, got the USB modem free from my ISP and have more pressing needs for my money.

Thanks for your thoughts and input; if you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear/read them too. This is infuriating.

Windows crashes with blue screen
If the error message you are getting on the blue screen: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message - it is a known problem in WinXP and it is not directly related to DSL-200 modem: it happens on certain motherboards with many USB devices.

Try disabling Windows XP Network Media Sensing feature. Follow the steps in this article: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Disable-Media-Sense-TCPIP-Windows-XP.html

In many cases updating BIOS on the motherboard or USB controller driver fixes the problem. There are also patches available from Microsoft which target this problem. Service Pack 1a for Windows XP also includes these patches. After you upgrade BIOS and USB controller drivers please reinstall the modem driver.

How to reinstall driver

Step 1. Download the latest driver for your modem from http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/. Save and extract the driver files into a folder on your computer.
Download the driver removal tool: http://files.dlink.com.au/Products/DSL-200/REV_B/Drivers/Uninstaller_for_Windows/DSL-200_Remove.zip

Step 2. Remove previous driver installation attempts. To do that leave the modem connected via USB to your computer.
Go to Control Panel > System > [Hardware] > Device Manager.
You will see a list of categories and devices installed and connected to your computer.
If the modem was installed correctly it should come up under Network Adapters category.
If your modem was not installed with correct driver, Windows will display it as 'Unknown Device' or 'Other Device'. You can identify incorrectly installed devices by Question Mark or Exclamation Point next to the device.
Right-click on such device and select Remove [Uninstall]. Close Device Manager.
Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the program related to the modem.
Now unplug the modem from your computer.
Run the DSL-200 Driver Removal Tool.

Step 3. Restart computer. Do not connect the modem to your computer yet.
Run the driver installation program first (the one downloaded in Step 1). You may be asked to reboot PC again. After the software installation finished you can plug the modem in and Windows should detect it automatically.

Troubleshooting
1. The device manager may be holding multiple copies of the drivers which might be preventing the drivers from being loaded properly. In order to address the problem, please do the following:
Boot into Safe Mode (press F8 during bootup and select Safe Mode). Once in Safe Mode, access the Device Manager and determine if there are multiple copies of the driver. If so, please uninstall them one by one until they are removed completely. You may need to click on View > Show Hidden Devices.

2. Here is another solution which may help if you are having troubles installing the driver:
Uninstall the modem driver using the steps above. Disconnect it from the computer.
Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Driver Signing. Set to 'Ignore - Install the software anyway'. Click on OK > OK.
Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Install the D-Link software. Then plug the modem in (still being in Safe Mode). Let Windows to install drivers.

3. In some cases with SP2 in Windows XP USB Controller may require reinstallation:
Uninstall the USB modem and then disconnect it from PC. Go into Device Manager and remove all USB Root Hubs and Universal Serial Bus Controller. Reboot the computer and Windows should reinstall the controller. Then try to reinstall the modem.

Whew! Thanks, that'll keep me busy when I get home this evening. Two possible issues, however, the text refers to a patch in SP1a, but I'm on SP2, so this should have been fixed with that. Secondly, I'm not seeing a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL message, but a BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER message. However, there are still some ideas in there that are worth looking at further. Again, thanks. Will post here to let folks know how it goes.

Just an update -- this is ongoing. Only over this weekend did I have the time to attempt anything.

I removed the driver using Windows (but missed out on the dlink driver-removal tool); updated the BIOS;
updated the USB drivers using the `critical update' from this website; reinstalled the modem.

It still crashed with a bugcode-usb-driver after a couple of hours. So no change.

Will try a more thorough removal at the next opportunity.
