Missing SBERET.MSI during WinXP Office update process
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 8200 system with WinXP Pro and the Microsoft Office XP applications.
I am attempting to update the Dell supplied WinXP Pro Microsoft applications with the Dell supplied Office XP applications CD. The updates that I am attempting to use come directly from the Microsoft Office Updates website. HOWEVER, I can't get the updates from this website to install because the Microsoft process indicates I need the SBERET.MSI file.
I have chatted with Microsoft who tell me to talk with Dell. I have chatted with Dell who tell me that any CD replacement costs $5 and that Dell would only supply me with the CDs that originally came with my Inspiron 8200. I have also attempted to use some WinXP Pro and WinXP Office CDs that I have used on another system. NO LUCK!!! Hence, Microsoft can't help me, Dell can't help me, the original CDs from Dell don't work, the Microsoft CDs for Office XP applications don't work either.
Does ANYONE have ANY ideas of what I can do?????

I do not have an sberet.msi file on my system with Office XP SBE but there are two mentions of it in my registry, both associated with installer keys. Have you activated your installation of Office? If not, the procedure for doing so is here.

Denny and others,
I've already activated by Office applications. Even tried to reactivate them, too. No luck.
Any other ideas?

Deleted, as my comment was irrelevant. Just realised that the sbe part of the file name refers to SBE office.

Thought about it a bit more. I have Office Pro, and on the Office Pro CD there is a file caled Proret.msi. By analogy, if you have Office SBE, it would not surprise me if you found Sberet.msi on your Office SBE CD, in the root folder. Check if it is there, in which case when installing an office update, when it says it cannot find sberet.msi, it should give you get the chance to find it, put your Office CD in the drive and browse to it, select and open.
In fact quite often during the install of Office updates, you get the message to insert the Office CD, precisely to look for the .msi file (it is an installation file that does not itself get copied to the hard drive when installing Office).

Your analogy was absolutely correct. The file is in the root of the Office SBE CD.
