I lose my display settings upon rebooting

I have an entry-level Inspiron 1300 and like to use a display setting of 1280x800 with 32 bit or 16 bit color.  But when I reboot, the setting gets changed to 8 bit somehow.  Every time!  I'd appreciate any ideas on this.  Thanx.
