this doesnt seem right

i have vista home premium  on my computer... down in the tray near my clock there is an icon there that says safely remove hardware- when i open it up it says

select the device you want to unplug or eject, and then click stop.  When windows notifies you that it is safe to do so unplug the device from your computer

 the following are listed

ST332062 OAS SCSI Disc Device

PBDS DVD +-RW DH-16W1S SCSI CdRom Device -(E:)

as far as i know i dont want to remove these and am not sure why this is happening or how to get rid of the icon

Well here is what I think is going on, I have seen a few of these posts about this issue.

Due to the type of Nvidia chipset and driver installed in Vista, Vista sees that Sata hard drive and Sata DVD drive as hot pluggable devices, so they show up in safely remove list, Some would consider this as some sort of advantage, but I do see that is a bit disconcerting for the average user, not sure if there is anything that can be done to keep them from showing up in "safely remove" list.

If I find a solution I will post it.

so its not hurting anything just to ignore it?

Yes, but you do not want to safely remove the ST entry, that is your hard drive with the operating system on it. It could lock up the PC if you did, Just want you to be aware of the potential problem.

I have asked a moderator to look into this issue.

"Nvidia serial ata chipset controller it came from windows updates a few months ago "

Oh, never use windows updates for drivers on a Dell, they cause too many problems.

"Hot swappable drives it does not work for hard drives"

Maybe that problem is only for system drives, have you tried it on a secondary drive?

I have two comments:

1.  I have always had the same thing on my computer in Safely Remove Hardware by the clock, for my hard drive and dvd drives.  I just ignore it.

2.  I can't recommend always using the Dell support site for downloading drivers.  I downloaded the latest update to my video card from Dell and it made my computer freeze frequently.  I had to restore my hard drive.  I also had to go directly to the ATI website and download a much newer driver than Dell offered.  That one worked.  I do tend not to download drivers from Windows Update, I just use the info to look for the drivers from Dell if I think I need them, and then I consider whether to go directly to the websight, especially if it's for ATI.
