XPS M1730 fan speed

Is there anyway to control the fan speed on the XPS M1730? I've tried RivaTuner but I don't think the fan control works on this laptop. My dual 8800M GTXs are sitting at 72 degrees just running Vista's 3D desktop yet the fans aren't even kicking in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yeah, I tried that tool already, it can't detect the fans and can only give me CPU data.

i8kfan 3.1 google and download it.

But i am not sure if the fan feature is supported on the 1730.

i8kfan works on my m1730, see screen below. Although it sees the GPU as one unit both fans are kicked on and off together.

Definitely has made a difference during gameplay

Yeah, I checked it out again after I saw a post by someone on the l8kfan forums saying it was working with a 1730. Got it detecting the temps now and forcing the fans on works.

Little confused though, was running RivaTuner at the same time and none of the temps seem to match.

Without the fans running RivaTuner is saying Core 0 and 1 are around 70, and Core is around 70, yet l8kfan is saying CPU is 30, GPU is 46.

With the fans running RivaTuner is saying Core 0 and 1 are only slightly lower (couple of percent) but Core has dropped to 47. l8kfan is saying the GPU is around 43 and the CPU is around 15.

Confused, don't know which one to believe.

Hmmm, actually noticed that theres 3 fans in the XPS M1730. l8kfan only turns the two side fans on, the central fan doesn't turn on.

The central fan is the HDD fan go into options on i8kfan and enable HDD sensor support and enable the fan.

Hard Drive Data section of l8kfan is faded out.

I had a look at the central fan. Looks like its over some board, can't see any heat pipes going to the harddrive bay (sitting in front of the right fan). You sure its the harddrive fan?

Either that or it is the GPU fan,or chipset fan

Yeah, I'm wondering if its the GPU or chipset fan. All three fans sit along the back of the laptop. The left and right fans are the ones that fire up with the l8kfan tool. I flipped the laptop on its side and watched the middle fan, it kicks in every do often but doesn't stay on for long. The two temperatures that don't change much are the GPU and chipset, so maybe the fans over the top of those.

Considering getting a laptop cooler for it now.

Post edited!  I thought it hadn't shown for some reason, so I re-did it.

Unbeknowns to me... the original/this post was showing on a new page!

There are much cheaper options available (mine cost £45.81 deliered), but I can heartily recommend the Zalman ZM-NC2000 :smileyhappy:

It's as if it was made to measure for the XPS M1730!

However... I don't have my laptop sitting directly on it as you might expect.

I've moved it down, so that the laptop's fans are over the cooler's ventilation holes.

You'll see the reason for this, if you look closely at pictures of the cooler (the top part is solid)... but I've done it, so the laptop is able to draw [a lot more] air from the cooler's ventilation holes into the laptop's fans more efficiently.

But I must give credit where credit is due!

I got the idea/advice from this review by a Dell community forum member

It's actually just one of a number of very useful videos he's done though, relating specifically to the XPS M1730 :smileywink:

Thanks for the reply guys. I've already received my W1 cooler so can't cancel it. It seems to fit the laptop pretty darn well (3 fans line up to the 3 fans on my laptop).

I'm retrying the Dell performance drivers that ifti (from notebookreview) is using and I'll do some more testing over the weekend.

Thanks again.
