Studio - Jammed Touch Sensitive Eject Button

Evening all,

The touch sensitive eject button on my new Studio 15 laptop appears to be stuck on. When I reboot the laptop, the media control lights flash back and forth as normal. However, the CD drive immediately ejects and the eject button light stays permanently on. This all happens the second the laptop comes on - long before it boots into Vista. This makes me suspect a hardware rather than software issue.

None of the other touch sensitive media controls work.

I've tried cleaning the button, checking for dirt under and on the button and rebooting the laptop. I also rested it overnight.

I only got the laptop on Friday.

Any ideas?

I think I have a solution, it seems to have worked for me. First, I upgraded my BIOS to A06 which initially didn't make a difference. Then I went back into BIOS setup and changed my boot order to put the DVD drive first/HDD second/USB third/and floppy fourth. No problems since then, I'll post again if it happens again.

Good luck.  Dell came out and replaced the palm rest and top cover.  The technician said the touch sensitive buttons being faulty is a common problem and he's replaced a lot of them.

After the new hardware, I haven't had a problem.

Yeah, the BIOS boot order didn't fix it after all. It seems that any trip into the BIOS prior to booting the OS will prevent the malfunction. Oh well...

Lemme know of there are any more problems after the replacement. I too will report the problem tomorrow.

I got my dvd drive and the touch sensitive console replaced and I still have the problem. Does anybody have a similar experience after replacing?

I too have been having this problem with the eject button on my Studio 1537.  I have BIOS version A07 and have tried a clean install of Vista 32-bit with no luck.  Dell sent me a replacement "hinge cover" which also did not fix it.  They are now sending me my first replacement system.  I don't have much hope that this will fix this problem at this point.  I truly think this is a BIOS problem.  I see that it must have been a problem in version A06 but is there anyone running A05 that is having this problem?

hi, i've a studio 1537 and it has problems with bios a07.  it is my third replacement the last two had bios a04 and bios a05.  on the website only a05 appears so don't know where a06 or a07 are but this one came with a07.  anyway all have media key issues and this one they got the wrong screen part so i'm letting them send me one more.

this one has settled down and the eject key only comes on briefly from cold start or wake up and other keys don't work but guess i'm just getting used to it.  its being collected on tue 13 and new one delivered same day.  i'm praying its going to be ok, but it will be the first one that doesn't have issues.

I too hoped that it would be fixed with a replacement, but the replacement also had the problem.  It doesn't appear to be a bios issue as I had A06 and A07 and both had the problem.  I don't think Dell factory even test the laptops for this before shipping, since I had 2 new studios with the same problem.  It appears they have a serious manufacturing oversight.

It wasn't until Dell technician replaced the palm rest and top panel (no change to bios) that it was fixed.  I'm not sure if it was actually the top cover or maybe the tech rerouted wires as to not intefere with the touch sensive sensors.  Some other posts mention rerouting the wifi antenna that runs directly under the CD eject and volume up.

I would not settle or get use to this.  It's a new and expensive laptop that should be free of defects.  Its in warranty, dell should fix it.

hi guys,

I see that this is the most horrible problem I've ever had with a computer/ laptop. But I say that it is no bios problem or something else.... and I think I'm right. The Studio 15 series has a problem with the Li-Ion battery. I took it off 2 weeks before and now the laptop runs on power adapter with no battery inside. And suddenly the errors (e.g. cd- eject) or the malfunctions of the media buttons were gone. Maybe the battery series is created by sony. Maybe you all remember that sony had a lot of problems with their batteries so they stopped the production and developed a new battery series. Dell also had sony batteries and maybe they still have. I've sent a email to the head- technician and posted the serious problems and they answered that they know that the Studio 15 series has a lot of defects.

So please try the battery- thing out I've mentioned at the beginning of my post. It would be interesting if it really works with other laptops and that it wasn't luck at all... in my case. Please post the first experiences!

And sorry for the language mistakes, I'm not from the states:D

hi,

this are the classic things for this problem and in some case it may work. But I tried the things out for example I removed the center control cover 2 times and nothing has changed. I also flashed the bios (now A06) but it was not the right thing. Without the battery  inside it runs great since 2 weeks. But I know that that's not he finest solution in case because if I want to use a computer without a battery I can use a pc and no laptop.... but it works. I also asked Dell for a new battery and after they've checked the serial number they will send me a new one.

So please try the thing without the battery (again) and post if it worked:emotion-21:

So, I'll try to keep this short so bear with my lack of grammar etc. :)

I bought a Dell Studio 15 last october, had the "stuck" eject button almost from the get go.

Contacted the Dell Support they sent me a new Touch Element thingy, problem was still there.

Contacted the Dell Support again, they told me to send it to an workshop, done.

They replaced the mainboard, problem still there.

Contacted them again, they wanted to send me a new Laptop - so they did, got it thursday, haven't had much time to look at the thing, but my initial test (starting it a couple of times) seem to not bring up the problem.

This morning I start the Laptopt and booyah, problem pop ups again.

I kinda feel, cheated by now.

Haven't contacted the support today but will do so shortly.

Btw. haven't read the whole thread completely but I discovered how to trigger the problem.

With my Laptop it only appears when the notebook is "cold".

This could be having it lying around on your balcony or having it lying around in a colder room - like mine when I sleep with the window open.

Or when I walk from the train to my lecture hall. (which is approximately five minutes)

Anybody else discovered this? Am I just unluck to get 2 buggy systems after one another?

hi there,

yeah I know this is a ugly problem. For nearly 4 month I discussed that problem with the Dell technicians and finally I got a new notebook on thursday... at this time no problems.

I don`t know if you had read my post but please try this out: remove the battery and connect the notebook to the power adapeter and leave it. never use the battery again und you will see that the laptop is more faster and you'll discover no problem, e.g. the eject button or even the audio button. Everything works fine. I did this for nearly 2 and a half weeks but if you do not use a battery than it's better to buy a pc and no notebook. But this solution works I can guarantee (in my case;)). please try it and post your experiences.

have a nice day!

edit:

I tried the thing to disconnect it from the Battery and power for a while, had it lying around like that over night, switched it on this morning and the problem was there again.

Mmhhh... ok sorry that it didn't work. Seems to be a more complicateted thing as Ithought at first. Maybe you should contact the Dell technicians again and maybe it is possible to get back your money. I had also 2 repair processes and then I got a new one.

The last thing is to disconnect the adapter and remove the battery. then press the start button for about 30sec put in the battery and then restart. In some cases it works fine after all but I had no luck with that solution. Maybe it helps.

And the last thing is to open the media bar cover and disconnect the cable.

My studio 1537 is having the stuck eject button issue. I'm in cold weather a lot. I don't know why that would affect the media controls. All I know is that I think I've read through every single post in the dell community threads and am sick about this issue.

This is my second studio 1537 - the first was replaced because of a serious bios issue.
