Processor Upgrade for Old B110
Hello,
I have an old and basic Dimension B110 with a Celeron 2.53 that I know I should really replace, but it is just not in the cards right now. I have done a few things to it to try to help it keep up. They are:
2 GB Memory
NVIDEA GeForce 6200
WD MyBook ~320 GB
I recently connected it to my 32" 1080 Samsung and most everything looks amazing. But when I attempt to watch full screen streaming video from Hulu.com, the video becomes choppy. So I figure the CPU is the next thing to upgrade.
I am looking at:
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 512/800 Northwood SL6WK
Pentium 4 3.4Ghz 1MB/800 Prescott SL7E6
So the questions are:
Will both of these work with the B110?
Comments on either?
Is there something else I should upgrade, instead of or in addition to the CPU?
Any other help in smoothing the video?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Dimension 1100 / B110
You cannot use ANY of the 3.XX Ghz northwoods.
Best you can do is PPGA 478 Northwood SL7EY and be stable IMHO.
Or perhaps the same one as the GX260 the 3.06 Ghz Hyperthread Penitum4
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor supporting HT Technology 3.06 GHz, 512K Cache, 533 MHz FSB
SL6JJ, SL6K7, SL6S5, SL6SM, SL6PG, SL6QC
Northwoods only NO PRESCOTTS.
3.XX GHZ Northwoods Require larger than the 200W Stock power supply and Aluminum heatsink.

Core stepping D1
Processor core Northwood
Manufacturing technology (micron) 0.13
L2 cache size (KB) 512
Core voltage (V) 1.475 - 1.55

Those CPUs will work but are not likely to solve your problem, which is more likely due to the integrated video. You'd probably be better off spending $50 or less on a video card - but you're limited to a 32-bit PCI card, which means you'll never boost it that far. Try one of the nVidia 6200 cards if you can still find one. That'll make more of a difference than a faster CPU will.

I already have a nVidea 6200, So it can't be the integrated video because it is disabled. Is there a better video card that I can get, or should I still look into upgrading the processor.
Thanks

I would look into a new system - there's no room for a better video card, and the CPU upgrade isn't going to make up for the relatively weak video.

I have the same type of issues, but not from streaming video. Mine comes from watching video off the harddrive or through software, like magix. or listening to music through I-tunes. installed a ATI 256mb vid card and sound card,... and 2gb of ram. I bought a CPU, a P4 2.8GHZ/512/800 socket 478. The BIOS recognizes it, but it always says that I dont have enough memory, then I try to restart. So I try again and the same thing happens. At first it tried to start windows, then whent blue screen, but always with a diferent problem. The factory celeron works OK, But I will likely have to reload windows. If anyone knows something I am missing, please let me know. It may help others as well.
To be more specific, I get
Memory write/read failure at,.....read....expecting....
Decreasing available memory,
Memory line failure at,....read,....expecting.....
Decreasing available memory,
amount of system memory has changed.
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility

Hello
I put the SL7E6 cpu in my B110 but I get a message that my system does not support this cpu and thus the cpu will run at lower speed. Indeed the cpu runs at 2.8GHz when it actually is a 3.4GHz.. Could you please tell me if there is a way to overcome this problem?
thank you in advance

costa123,
We never validated that processor for this PC. There is nothing we can do.

3.06 Ghz is the fastest.

It is stated above that the SL7E6 cpu will work fine in the B110. Do you know which is the fastest cpu that will work in this pc?
Thanx

Newer Inspiron 530 at $399 or used 530 tower at $199 is a better upgrade.

Thanks for posting the list of Intel sSpecs, I notice that the fastest FSB is 533MHz. I recently tried a 3GHz SL7E4 (800MHz FSB) in a Dimension 1100 which was recognised but performed slower than my original 2.8 GHz Celeron. Should a new processor be automatically detected or are some manual settings required.
I assumed 800 FSB was OK from the specs in the B110/1100 user guide where it talks about the memory speed and system clock -
NOTE:
DDR333 memory runs at 320MHz when configured with Pentium 4 800MHz FSB processors
System Clock Intel Pentium 4: 800 MHz
Have I misunderstood the references in the manual and a 533 FSB processor is really the limit, any advice welcome.
Thanks

Prior to installing the processor, check that the BIOS have the latest version A01, when support for newer processors was added.

Is it possible that B110's just don't like the Prescott's? Would we have better luck using a Northwood?
There is another thread relating to this here.

Yes it has version A01 on there now. But will it run at a reduced speed as these other guys have had problems with? Or will the cpu be able to run at it's full potential? This is an SL7B8 that we're talking about now.

Bad news, just installed the cpu today and it is running at a reduced speed. It is a 3.2 GHz 1M 800 Prescott but is only running at 2.7 GHz. Any idea why this is happening or if there is a way to fix it? The bios installed is the most one A01. This is extremely disappointing.
