Disk Defrag

Hi Sherr, To use defrag on a regular basis will speed up your computer and your bootup and shut down. What i would do is to use disk cleanup first to get rid of all rubbish on your computer. Disk defrag can take several hours depending on your size and how much data you have on your Hard Drive. I always do it at least once a month.

If there is fragmentation on the drive, then a disk defrag will clear it up and you will notice an overall improvement in speed and system response when loading games, opening folders (thumbnail generation of JPEGs, for eg), copying files etc. If there was no fragmentation to begin with, then the performance improvement will not be noticeable.

Anyway, defrag regularly to keep the system running smoothly. It always helps.

As for the question about defrag software, it depends on the user. Some people require more than what the ancient XP defragger can provide. That utility has some drawbacks such as slow speed, no defrag of a fragmented master file table, no defrag of the page file, no defrag of multiple drives at the same time, no automatic defrag etc. Many people find it worthwhile to get a commercial defragger to avoid these, some others are happy with the XP defragger. It's a personal decision.

I use Diskeeper 2009 Professional, which I upgraded from Diskeeper 2008 Professional that I used for a year. I personally find its features better than other defragmenters, and worth the price since it is a truly automatic defragmenter: merely install it and it silently defrags all the drives automatically  and properly, when necessary. I do not have to think about defragmenting. You can do what I did last year before I bought it: try out the free trial versions from their website.
