Hard drive error 2000-0141 on Vostro 1000

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

My laptop today fails to boot up. When I run the built in diagnostics, it throws up the error 2000-0141 which I now know points to HDD failure.

The laptop is under warranty so I will be contacting Dell but I need to know whether there is any other utility s/w I could run to fix the disk (if its fixable)? Also, what is the chances of recovering any data if I was to take the drive out and attached to another system via a disk caddy?

The drive is a Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00

Thanks

If the drive is still readable, chances are good you will be able to retrieve at least some, and possibly all, of your data.

Welcome to the forums Sinbad :emotion-21:

You could install the drive to an external enclosure, and try running Hitachi's own hard drive diagnostics/restoration software on it, to see if the drive itself is salvageable?

If not... you're going to need 'data recovery' software to try and get files off it.

Just Google the term, and you'll find any number of programs.  I've personally used GetDataBack (NTFS) with great success in the past, but it's not cheap.

I'd suggest you try a few of the free programs available first - before considering whether the data you want off the drive is valuable enough to warrant splashing out however much it costs to buy data recovery software :emotion-55:

Have a look-see at PC Inspector File Recovery v4.x for starters :emotion-5:

As suggested above... unless the drive is really shot... the chances are good that you'll be able to get a good chunk - if not most of your important data off it :emotion-5:
