:^/ The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is a Windows® thing.  Indeed, cwbymechanic71 quoted it as saying, in part: "Windows has to shut down to prevent damage to your computer...."  So, I'd say that the BIOS should still be accessible.  Just hit F2 as the machine is powering on, and access it that way.

Then, using the BIOS menues, configure the laptop to boot from CD, save the changes, boot from the Windows® install disc, etc.  It's likely that the drive will have to be re-formatted, though it may be possible to salvage files from it first....

:^/ Puppy Linux is free, and boots from CD into a live environment in RAM, so one is even able to remove the CD after booting.  It also allows one to mount/unmount volumes as one wishes, and to copy files to/from volumes.  In this situation, I'd boot with Puppy Linux, and mount both the internal hard drive and an extenal hard drive or thumb drive, and salvage any critical files before re-installing Windows®.

;^) Silver Lining® time: since you'll likely have to re-install the OS, etc. from scratch anyway, this is a good opportunity to upgrade to a larger hard drive, if you already had thoughts along that line....

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

EDIT:

If for some reason that will not work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Alright...

I have no idea what that means.  The only place to go from the black screen that appears is to setup, and from there safe mode, etc.  None of the options lead anywhere but the unmountable boot volume.  I know nothing about computer tech, so I don't know what BIOS means.  understand DOS, so the next steps made sense to me, but it's getting the first step done that is the problem.

I can't change anything, because there are no options to.  Once it gets to the blue screen you can do nothing but power off.

ok...BUT...how do you boot to a cd?  I have my software in, and have tried restarting with it in the player, but I still get the same message.  Nothing happens differently.

You will have to set it in BIOS to boot from disk.

Without the XP cd,and getting the BSOD,the only way you will be able to do this is to wipe the drive and reinstall XP.

You said it will not go past the blue screen(BSOD),if this is the case, you can't get into the BIOS to set it to boot from disk either.Unless someone else can chime in on how to get past this.

How can one be sure to save files - I have a bluescreen issue - IRQL_NOR_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP: 0x0000000A   any advice?

one thing is that there is hardly any memory left - so I need to get in to take files out and then do all the rest - I can get in to the F12 set up screen but don't know what to do next ....
