XPS Studio 1640 LCD brightness

I recently purchased and took delivery of an XPS Studio 1640 laptop  All is working fine except that I have a problem with the LCD brightness.  On login, the brightness setting is at the brightest possible.  I have worked with tech support in getting the bio settings set at 4  for both AC and DC power (out of 16 possible).  When I log out, and back in, the settings are not saved and the screen once again is at the brightest.  I have to manually Fn/downarrow control the brightness.  Apparently there is a fix in the works for this issue.  Has anyone else had this same issue?........

Thanks!!!

Does the same thing happen if you set the brightness in the Power Options?

I just got this laptop yesterday. I was looking a way to turn off the lcd (i only manage found software solution) and saw this thread. I notice that brightness ALWAYS set to brightness regardless what you do when you reboot. At first I didn't notice since it was set to high until I read your thread and try lowering the brightness. So you mention that they are working on, any time when they will fixed the issue?

I gave up the unit couples months ago and return for refund. They were not able enable to address several issues after sending back 3 times. Almost all my issues are same what this guy post on his blog http://karunab.com/2009/04/10/dell-studio-xps-1640-issues/

I have this same problem. The screen brightness level does not seem to be 'saved' when resuming from sleep or hibernation. A cold boot on battery also seems to give the same problem.

I would suspect it is a BIOS issue. The LCD brightness seems to be hardware controlled as opposed to software controllable, based on the fact that there no brightness level settings in Windows 7 power options). The brightness is also right up full from power on.

Just another note, I am using the RGB LED screen.

Hopefully this 'fix' appears soon... considering your post was in April and it is now +4 months.

Hello KirkD,

I apologize for not monitoring the site more closely since this issue became and issue for me...which was right after I removed the computer from the box last spring.  Thank you for the response.

To answer your question, belatedly, yes, the same thing happens no matter what brightness setting, or any other setting I, or the techies have been able to come up with.  I have been traveling with the laptop for quite some time and have had no other technical issues, other than the persistant and aggrevating brightness issue.  Now, I just habitually manually dim the LCD. with the Fn/down arrow.  Not much else can be done I guess.

I have yet to recontact the tech folks further to see if there is anything further for a fix, but, the sceptic that I am, I suspect that I will not see progress.  I'll call tomorrow for follow-up.

If you hear of anything, please do let me know.

Again, thanks for your reply and interest.

Hello thedarkestshadow,

Thanks for your feedback.  It's appreciated.

Did you ever work with technical support recenly to resolve the issue?  I spent a good deal of theirs and my time trouble shooting the issue in the beginning with no results.  I'm assuming you recently worked through tech support too and have found no solution.  The last call to tech support that I made, last April, they indicated that a fix was in the mix.  Apparently it is still in that mix.

I've been on travel a good deal of the summer and have lacked free time to pursue the issue.  All I do now is robotically adjust the bright screen using the Fn/down arrow on boot-up.

I'll call tech tomorrow for a update on the issue.   Perhaps someone will know something by now.  If I do hear anything positive, I will certainly post the result.

Again, thanks.

I'm having the opposite problem you guys are now that I've upgraded to the new bios. When the compter starts up into windows, the brightness is dimmed all the way down and I have to hit the fn key and the up arrow once to bring it back to the saved brightness. This is driving me crazy. Hopefully there is an easy fix.
