Vostro 200 PCI-e Problem
Hi, as stated I have a Vostro 200 Slim, I bought an Asus EAH3450 PCI-e low profile, card works ok on another computer, in the Vostro I don't get any video, if I change the VGA conector to the onboard video with the computer on there's a screen saying that I must disconnect that cable and connect it to the new card, which is what I already did, its like the onboard video keeps detecting the monitor even if it isn't plugged in anymore, any ideas??? TIA

I agree. My DELL is only 14 months old. I have the same problem and all I want to do is to run a graphics card. Like others I have tried other cards, updated the BIOS, installed a bigger power supply etc. All to no avail!!
I believe it is wrong of DELL not to provide support for this as its affecting more than one user.
Any ideas how we progress this?

I had a chat with DELL support again last week and pointed them to this forum. Nevertheless they say it's not a production fault....
AND they proposed to let me send in the PC and check it - at costs of €200 (200 euro - appr. 300 Dollar) - with the additional costs of a new motherboard of 100 euro (150 dollar).
So that's almost a new Vostro.....
I didn't accept it, I want then to admit it's a production mistake and replace it and if not, a solution to repair it - eitherway at no extra costs.
Or is a VOSTRO not a professional PC enough to give such support?

I am having the same problem and have tried every option in this forum. There is nothing I can do in order to get my BIOS to show the PCI-E video option. Can anyone at Dell help us here???

Disable your display under device manager. Worked for me on a Vostro 220 slim tower.

just posting to thank you for finding this fix. Bought an MSI NVidia 240GT back in May and just got it to work tonight after reading your post. I upgraded the ram and never would have thought that it would cause this type of problem.

Franky, I couldn't believe this when I read it, BUT I was having the exact same problem. First, I disabled my Intel graphic adaptor in the Device Manager, plugged the monitor into the GEForce 210 card, went into Setup - Advanced Chip Setup, and finally saw the PCIexp option. However, after saving, the screen still went blank. I had three 1 GB memory chips in the 1st 3 banks from the back. I took out the chip in the 3rd from the back, and VOILA, the monitor worked. For kicks, I put the 1 GB chip in bank 4 and it didn't work - seems like we can only use the first 2 banks from the bank if we want the PCIexp slot to work - hard to believe. I'm sure you saved my hours of frustration and a headache. I hope this helps others.

Absolutly unbelievable that this worked - I bought a new PSU and was considering a new Mobo, but pulling one of my 1GB sticks to leave only a pair worked. Thank you so much for taking the time to have posted this solution.

Hi Guys im a bit behind you folk, but am having the exact same issue with a Vostro 200 Slim.Firstly im trying to install an ATI Radeon Sapphire HD5450 PCI e Card. What is worse is when i go to the device manager, i do not even see a Display adapter as such. Underneath my Network adaptor icon i have a yellow question mark saying "Other Devices" and when expanded another yellow question mark with "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)"
I have reflashed the bios, uninstalled the card driver disk, updated the driver disk, but nothing. The Hardware detector does not even see the card at all. As this is a ATI Card and not an Nvidia, could that be the Issue? i too have tried reconfiguring my RAM chip layout, but to no avail,
Anyone have any further suggestions?

Only thing that helped for our PC is using a DELL video card ....

Thankyou.Removing the 2 x 512mb ram fixed the problem for me to.Mine is a Vostro 200 slimline.I also went to advanced chipset options and changed to pci express, but that didn't work.Stil had a blank screen and then could only start in safe mode.I am now happily using my Nvidia GeForce 210 without any problems.I am currently only using the 2 x 1gb ram until I get hold of 2 x 2gb sticks.Everything is working perfectly.Oh and I also changed PSU from 300w to 550w before I removed the ram as well.That didn't help either.So the only way it fixed mine was removing the 3rd & 4th ram from their slots.

I want to thank you all for taking the time to post your solutions. My friend had two Vostro 200s in his old shop and I took them home to set one up for my son to play around on. The first one gave us issue after issue but the new video card I bought worked on it. I finally got around to swapping out the pcs to see if the other one worked better but this other PC would not detect the video card having the same issue described here. Only having two slots of memory I went with the above solution which actually worked. In safe mode I only had one video card showing so I disabled that one. This worked regardless. Thanks again for all who have posted on this issue!!

This is the solution which worked for me.
Plugin the card.
Go to BIOS.
Pick the lowest to the left and then the lowest again.
Change from RAID to IDE.
Done.
