Will newer version of Windows XP allow added PCI modem board to be recognized?
The Dell Studio 540 computer which I bought at Best Buy came with a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 modem. The modem works fine with Vista which is on the computer's original SATA drive. However, I added a 2nd SATA drive which I configured with an early version of Windows XP. When I boot to the XP hard drive, the modem apparently is not recognized, since it's not listed by the device manager. I wonder if a newer version of XP (like one with SP2) will allow a PCI board to be found, but, I'm reluctant to spend $200 unless I'm sure it will solve the problem.
At first I assumed that I just needed to find an appropriate driver for the modem. I thought I was all set when I found that the Dell Inspiron 530 can be bought with XP and the same modem board I have. So, I downloaded the modem driver for the Inspiron. But, when I tried to install it, I discovered that the computer didn't recognize that a modem is present. Obviously, it's not currently possible to get the computer online under XP.
I'd appreciate advice on what will be needed to have the modem recognized by XP. Thanks for any help.

On the XP drive system, did you properly install XP? (Not just connect a hard drive with XP already installed). The correct install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers (e.g. sound, video, modem, etc). If the chipset drivers are not installed (which define what is on or attached to the motherboard) some devices will not be recognized, even if the correct driver is trying to be installed. If you have the correct Dell driver for the modem, the install sequence and especially the often overlooked chipset drivers sound like the problem.

Fireberd, thanks so much for your post. Since I was unaware of the need to install chipset drivers, I did not even attempt to do this. Therefore, I assume you are correct that this is the problem. When seeking drivers for the Studio 540, I downloaded a few files, including one identified as "chipset". Tomorrow, Ill try unzipping and installing this file. I hope it will allow the modem to be found. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I'll soon report the results of my efforts.

Fireberd, here's another great big THANK YOU for your help with my troubles. I'm posting this message via the problematic Windows XP hard drive. So, you can see that I got XP to recognize the modem. With guidance from you and the "chipset" ReadMe file, I was able to get some of the Intel drivers installed. Following this, the modem driver installed successfully. Now that this is done, I'm optimistic I'll be able to resolve any other outstanding driver issues. Your recommendation has gotten me on the way to configuring Windows XP the way I want. Thanks.
