dell color laser 3000cn smearing

From looking around on this site I see a common problem with my printer is consistent smearing, and that (DELL-Bill B), moderator, was identified in March 2008 as someone who might be able to arrange a drum replacement (apparently the drum is the problem).  We have had this problem for over a year, and I've replaced the toner cartridges, but that hasn't helped.  Is it possible to get a new drum, because the one that came with the printer is apparently defective?

I'm about 99.9% sure that Dell has stopped replacing these for this issue...... they have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. However, I think if you rcvd this drum within the last year, you might still be able to get it replaced as a "defective consumable". Good luck.

That said, there is a pretty good workaround.

If you read all the threads on this issue, you found that the culprit is the top cover on the drum unit has warped downward and interferes with the image overlay process on the belt...... the cover literally scrapes the image from the belt in a lateral pattern.

Here's a good image of a worse case example of this problem. Note that black is not affected by this problem.

Here are examples of how to remove the cover, examine and correct the problem. The cover can also be left off, but this makes installation and removal of the drum in the printer a little difficult.

This was spot on, thanks. Shame Dell didn't email to users about this rather than me putting up with a poor output for the past 6 months. Also, shame I didn't join this earlier. I guess Dell would prefer us to sign up to their expensive helpline so we can pay to sort out their problems!

Thanks again

Chris

llynster, you saved my old 3000cn printer again.  The printer was streaking and removing the cover for the drum fixed the problem.  Thanks for all your input to this forum!

Super thread! Removed the cover, and all smearing gone. Sanding down the cover did not resolve the issue. Shame on Dell for this mishap, and lack of initiative to replace these drum units.

Works fine for me. 3100cn only 12700 copies.  Removed the cover and smearing gone. Thanks.
