XPS GEN 4 SB Audigy 2 No Sound Problems

Help! I've ran out of ideas on what to troubleshoot next..or how to fix my "no sound problem". My husband installed a new WD Caviar Blue SATA HD on my XPS Gen 4 PC. After sucessfully installing all major components, we ran into a problem with the sound card. After much searching and post reading, I went to the Creative Labs website and down loaded the most up to date driver for my sound card; which I thought was kind of funny that I couldn't find the factory installed driver on Dell's website?! I checked my device manager after doing so and everything is working properly, the audio chipsets are working and were installed properly...nothing is muted, everything is defaulted and yet still no sound! Once I did the upgrade from the Creative Labs website, when I reboot my PC, I hear a portion of the windows start up melody..but not the entire thing..bizaar! I am fairly intermediate when it comes to PC's...and I read directions quite well..but I am at a loss as to what to do next. All I want is to have sound from my PC! Once again, my PC is a XPS Gen 4 using a Creative Labs SB Audigy 2ZS (EMU10K2), DR 2.12.1. Any direction or help on what to do next will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks. I also noticed that my PC initially wanted to find "new hardware" and I installed the drivers that route first. I did install all the other downloads it suggested with the driver from Creative Labs. It was the Creative Audio Console and I installed the Creative Wavestudio 7, even though I doubt I'll ever use it. I also read that to change any of your volume settings once you've downloaded the Audio Console, it has to be done through that...which I thought was silly, but whatever. I had uninstalled the drivers..all of them, and reinstalled. This time around I used the driver CD that came with the PC and installed the initial set, then went back to the Creative Labs website to upgrade...and still I have the same results as before. I'm tempted to try uninstalling everything sound related and try again...I've just never had such a hassle with sound cards till now!

Same computer, I had the identical issue with the sound where i would hear the beginning of Windows startup and then it would shut off with a "pop," very annoying. Kept having to go into control pannel and uninstall creative drivers and then restart and then direct the computer to add new hardware, and it would find the sound card, install it, and it would work. Then, I had to not shut down, just go standby and it was good till it restarted for some other reason.

Like you, i went to creative website and downloaded the driver (it was not on the dell site), but this has solved my problem completely. I remember having to install a whole suite of drivers and other junk from creative's site when i did it.. It was more than just a soundcard driver. See if you can find those additional downloads i'm talking about. I think the process requested full access and to change computer defalts, and i allowed it. Good luck.

First on a new install the correct and required install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Intel Chipset Drivers (3) Install Device Drivers such as sound, video, etc.

The chipset drivers are the most often skipped item and the chipset drivers MUST be installed before attempting to install sound drivers.

For some unknown reason Dell does not have the Audigy 2ZS sound drivers on their downloads, just an update but if you lost the Dell supplied driver CD for the sound card, you should be able to find the drivers on the Creative (SoundBlaster) downloads.  The Dell Audigy 2ZS is a Dell custom model so you need to get the correct Audity 2ZS driver version to have full functionality with the Dell OEM Version sound card.

If the chipset drivers were skipped you can install them and then install the Audigy 2ZS drivers and it should work.  In a few isolated cases it will take a new and correct install sequence to get everything working.

I took your advice, went and checked to make sure the chipsets were installed..and when I run my driver's CD the hardware scan is showing that they are present. So with that, should I uninstall the sound driver I just downloaded from Creatives website and reinstall it? Do I need to uninstall the chipset drivers and reinstall those too? I am really hoping I won't need to reinstall windows.
