Charly22,

If you live in the United States and are the origional owner, you can request a backup set of disks by clicking below my signature.

I would wait for the disks before proceeding as we can repair XP without losing any files and folders(programs, too!). It is always suggested to make copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.

I really don't think you'll need a disk, unless you installed some of the security software they offer, for a fee.

I am using windows XP home edition which was installed on the computer when i bought it from dell, i have no disc for this as the PC restore is the automatic one.

My ISP is Virgin altho the disc was NTL which was the one i installed when i bought this computer , virgin took them over.

Charly22,

What operating system are you using?

Depending on how you re-install the system, and we'll get into this better after you post your operating system, you should have the operating system like it was when you got it. I would suggest that you always make copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.

I have Verizon DSL. It came with a disk. I do not install this as I can connect without it. Maybe if you told us what your ISP is, it might help.

Charly22,

You get the disk, you'll insert the disk and restart your computer.

Press any key to boot from CD.

Choose install.

Do the agreement.

Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. Now you'll need to get all the Windows Updates, again.(more painful)

Your system should be almost like new. Please get the Windows Updates but do NOT allow Microsoft to update your drivers. Microsoft either offers the wrong drivers and/or the drivers get installed wrong, causing many devices to have problems. If you have a device problem, post it in the forum and someone will be glad to help you.

Keep me posted.
