Dell Latitude D620 Sound Drivers

These instructions are for a situation where an operating system has already been reinstalled and everything works except the audio driver will not install ... usually you get an error message, because the Notebook System Software and chipset drivers were not installed correctly and the audio chip on the motherboard is not recognized. In this situation "usually" a fresh install of the OS is not required, just re-installing the NSS and chipset correctly. If that doesn't work then a full re-installation may be necessary.

After you have performed an Operating System re-installation, install in this order:

a. Dell Notebook System Software (on your downloads page expand the System Utilities category). Restart.

b. Next install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver (expand the Chipset category). Restart.

c. Install the Sigmatel audio driver (expand the Audio category).

Get these from the your driver downloads page. When you get on the page use the dropdown box to select your Operating System.

followed the above instructions but i still don't have any sound, anything else i can do?

Try this, it might work.

1. Go to c:\Dell\drivers\R171789 and delete the R171789 folder.
2. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 and get the UAA driver. Install it and restart the computer.
3. Download R171789 again or use the one you downloaded earlier.
4. After it finishes extracting the files and begins to install, cancel.
5. Open Device Manager and expand System devices near the bottom. If you see a PCI Device entry with a ? next to it. Go to the properties and choose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the drivers and don't let windows look for drivers on the net or automatically. Browse to
c:\Dell\drivers\R171789\WDM

With any luck it should detect some new hardware and one of them should be the Sigmatel.

Could it be that the device is really no longer functioning?

Did you install the Notebook System Software first, and restart before installing the Intel chipset driver?

here is what i needed to do to get it all working.

First do a complete reinstall of windows.

After that, do as jimco mentioned above:

" install in this order:

Then

Then i got the message "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus"  and was able to fix that by MANUALLY installing this driver:

I skipped 1-4 and just did step 5 and it worked.

I've solved the problem for windows 7 64 bits (i guess it should also work forn win 7 32 bit). Unsintall the audio device "High definition Audio" that windows 7 install automaticaly (plug&play).

Download Vista driver, the file name is R171788.exe.

Then you install it normaly, you have to reboot after the instalation.

What worked for me:

Install XP Service Pack 3 and then simply run the dell driver install as normal!  Works great now!  Don't do a complete reinstall, it is not necessary.  After installing the service pack, you'll see the sigmatel audio codec appear in your device manager with an exclamation point next to it.  Run the driver install, let it find the driver automatically (don't browse for the WDM folder).

To anyone who sees this later,  if you have XP Service Pack 3 then you don't need the UAA driver hotfix that I linked to earlier in this thread, because it is already included with SP3.
