Latitude E6500 Microphone Issue

We are a Fed government contractor, ordering several Latitude E6500 systems. The systems were ordered explicitly WITHOUT onboard camera/microphones, which is a requirement for government-owned computer systems. The packing list recieved with the systems indicated they were without camera/microphone, however, when the systems were unpacked, it was discovered that they indeed did have the upper-LCD panel microphone installed, and testing was done with the Windows sound recorder to verify there was an operational microphone installed. Dell customer service was contacted, and arranged to cross-ship us replacements. We just recieved the replacements today, and guess what? these have microphones installed also.....  I'm posting this to see if this is just a one-off (make that two-off) mistake on Dell's part, or is this model unavailable (despite what the ordering page, and our packing lists say) WITHOUT a microphone?? Our procurement is on the phone with Dell again... I'd like to be able to update them on whether this is a widespread problem or just us being VERY unlucky....

First, this is the Desktop Audio Section.  There is a separate section for Laptops.  Also, keep in mind we are just users helping users on here, we are not Dell employees.  With commercial account systems you should contact a commercial account rep.

I'm a retired Fed Government Network and Help Desk manager, I never heard of that requirement when I was working.  But, if it was "off the shelf" equipment or GSA schedule systems we got whatever the vendor had.  If it was a contract procurement then we could specify what we wanted the the Contractor (Integrator or equipment vendor) had to provide what the RFP required.

I have no idea how the post I distinctly put into the laptop/audio forum got into the desktop/audio forum... One more reason why I hate this new forum design.. Also I *understand* this is a user-to-user forum.. Thats why I posted this message here, as I wanted to find out FROM users of this model if this is just us being unlucky or if this model laptop is only manufactured with a microphone..  We are talking with our Dell sales rep on this.. Apparently you didn't work for the Dept of Energy/NNSA (National Nuclear Security Agency) as its comp-sec policy is no cameras/microphones on any computer equipment. Since this post apparently got into the wrong forum, I'd appreciate any Dell mods moving it to the correct forum, as I would like user input on this....

Thank you

The moderators haven't been too good about moving a post so you may be better off just reposting.

I worked for SSA (I was the Midwest Regional "SSANet" LAN/WAN Network and Hardware Help Desk Manager).

With those requirements I would have expected "custom built" systems, not off the shelf ir GSA schedule systems.  All the off the shelf systems I've seen have the mic built in.

We previously ordered Latitude D-series laptops which could be ordered easily without mikes. We were informed by Dell that the D630 we previously had been ordering was discontinued, so we went with a 15" E-series. The system build webpage showed an option to leave off the mike, and thats how we ordered them. The packing list we recieved from Dell with the systems showed "No Microphone"... however both shipments had microphones... As for reposting: As I type this reply, the top of my browser shows Dell.comForums > Tech Support Topics > Laptop > Audio > Latitude E6500 Microphone...>Post a Message.  You told me that this was in Desktop/Audio, but as far as I can see, this IS in the correct forum.... Unless there is something seriously wrong with Dell's new forum software.... nah, that couldn't be....

Ha ha.

But seriously I can confirm that this thread has been on the Laptop Audio Board since at least yesterday afternoon.

Ok... thanks for the verification.. Ever since Dell decided to switch to this new forum s/w, I've tried to refrain from venturing into it (VERY slow).. Only reason I came in this time was to *try* and see if any other government/government contractor E-series users who have the same "no-camera/no-mike" requirements as us, were seeing this problem... If it is an issue with the left-hand of Dell not telling the right-hand.. ie: marketing showing a choice of mike/no mike on the build page and engineering building ALL units with mikes, I'd like to know, so we can divert from trying to buy any more E-series Latitudes.. They seem to get the "no-camera" part ok....

Maybe more E series owners would see your question if you were to post on the Laptop General Hardware Board. It should have more participation than the Laptop Audio Board.
