Inspiron 1525 Microphone Problem

Hey all. I recently updated my laptop to Windows 7 and everything seemed to be going great. I downloaded the program Ventrillo to talk to my friends and as soon as i plug in my microphone, i realized that my computer was picking up everything from the mic that was built in to my computer rather than my headset. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this. Thanks in advance.

There have been several posts like yours recently. I don't know the solution, but here are some tips that worked on Vista:

If you are trying to use an external microphone with an aplication make sure to right click on the soud icon in the system tray click recording devices then put microphone/line in as your default  -- originally posted by forum member 040794 (Inspiron 1525)

Go to the
Control Panel choose "Hardware and Sound" then "Manage audio devices" in the Sound tab, then the "Recording" tab.
RIGHT CLICK on the dialog box and select "Show disconnected devices" and/or "Show disabled devices"
Left click on Microphone array to select it and click "Properties"
To the right of Device Usage, click the arrow pointing down and select "use this device(enable)"
Then choose Apply and OK. You will now see in the Sound/ Recording tab that its working.

Go into the Control Panel Area "Audio" recording device. Right-click in the space where (the mic) was displayed before and then press "activate" at the relevant mic shown. -- originally posted by forum member PPR (E1505)

Other than that I can't think of anything except to be sure the Sigmatel audio driver is installed correctly.

I have the same problem on my XPS M1530.

Microphone/line in is selected as standard and there's this green checkmark (only) when I plug it in. However neither Windows audiorecorder nor Skype seem to find/recognize it and display error messages. The built-in microphone works. I'm also sure the hardware is ok since it worked two days ago when I still had Vista.

Could this be a problem with the Sigmatel drivers (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio) in Windows 7, since they're only available for vista? Anyone know if and when there are going to be Windows 7 drivers?

I just finally found a driver that is making it work: http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sigmatel-stac-vista-audio-driver.html

I found it in http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19301580.aspx and I don't know anything about this HD protocol, but just tried it and everything is fine and the headset works again.
