Inpiron 1721 loss of screen content

My Dell Inspiron 1721 has suddenly lost the image on the screen. If i plug in an external monitor I can see the screen content. I see the following message:

File: \Boot\BCD

Status 0xc000014c

Any ideas of cause or better still a solution would be an excellent help.
