Battery not charging, AC adapter not recognized

Do you have the latest BIOS installed?

I didn't update the BIOS because the laptop thinks it's on battery even when the ac adapter is plugged in. I will try to update the BIOS now. Also, now the battery shows 250 hours at 7% and the battery light is flashing red (before it was steady red). This after being plugged into ac power for 12 hours. Also, when I remove the battery with the laptop booted up and ac adapter plugged in, the laptop shuts off.

Your taking a risk flashing without A/C power for if you lose power in the middle of the flash you could brick your motherboard. You might try replacing your A/C adapter first or plug in your current A/C adapter to a different outlet with out a surge protector. Does the power light on the A/C adapter come on when plugged into an outlet. If it comes on and then goes out when you plug into the computer then you have an issue with the motherboard. If the light on the power adapter never comes on, then you may need a new power adapter.

It could be a bad adapter or a bad motherboard connection. The adapter is cheaper to replace. The motherboard problem is probably not worth fixing since it would cost nearly as much as a new computer.

To rehash the problem, I do not have the "ac adapter type cannot be determined" problem. My D610 does not recognize it is on ac power even though it operates only on ac power and only with the battery. I did not update the BIOS as it appears I have the latest version. I also realized I have 2 "DELL COMPATIBLE" and not genuine Dell ac adapters, so I have ordered another adapter that is genuine Dell. I will post the results in a few days.  :emotion-40:

The reviews of the refurb dell ac adapter for $44 were bad (failure after 6 and 10 mos.)so I bought this one. The laptop was originally shipped with a 65 watt adapter. Why do you recommend a 90 watt adapter?

I got the 90 watt adapter from the Parts and Upgrades page here. I believe that either the 65 watt or 90 watt a/c adapter will work.  An advantage that the 90 watt will have is I believe it will charge your battery quicker.

I charged the battery over night in another laptop, (removed the CMOS battery over night as well), plugged it into the D610 without the ac adapter, and the laptop is functioning normally. I conclude the problem lies in the adapters and will report results with the genuine dell adapter when I get it.

Just got the new AC Adapter - PA10 - and the laptop works fine. I had to rollback the system restore to get the WiFi to work but everything else seems normal. The PA10 does charge the battery faster than the PA12 also.

So... if things are acting wierd with your Dell's power situation, try a new GENUINE DELL adapter, not a knockoff you find on eBay.

Many years later I'm having this same issue. My dell studio xps 13 does not charge on the AC adapter unless I leave it off then turn it on much later. After getting a new battery and charger you never encountered any more issues?
