hi
what is the fastest intel core 2 processor i can buy for my dell optiplex gx620?
it has a pentium 4 2.8ghz LGA 775 socket
I heard about the fsb bieng capped at 800mhz and wondered also if i could buy a dell optiplex board that supports intel core 2 or if their is any way to flash the BIOS to allow this
regards

SMITHFIELD PRESSLER Pentium D 960 is max with bios a11 and the copper heatsink. Must be the Tower 305w power supply or the cpu cannot be faster than 2.8Ghz.

Yes the D945 with Intel name SL9QQ is a 95 Watt CPU vs a 130 Watt CPU.. Just search for SL9QQ. Can get one for like $6 or so. It's a no brainer.

If you want basic upgrade get an optiplex 755.
If you want much more look for a precision T3500.

I just want to confirm the information from the previous post.
I just installed D945 in my GX620 and it runs great and really is much faster than previous processors that I've had.
The processor is not overheating.
I've installed another fan in case, and everything works great.
Thanks to everyone who commented on this topic. They have helped me to upgrade my old computer.

You didn't install a SL9QQ/ SL9QB 945 @ 2.8Ghz. The SL9DA / SL9KB is 2.8 Ghz the Perhaps you are a Bot posting nonsense.

The GX620 best upgrade is the Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU3.40GHZ. It installs either 32 or 64 bit Windows 10 with no problems. You will have to go with a Dell Optiplex 780 or one with a socket 775 that supports Duo core to see any improvement in speed. Do install the latest BIOS update. These make really good computers at a low cost.
