Unable to connect to internet

I'm helping out a friend with a Studio 1555 running Vista Home Premium (64-bit).

Her wired connection had been working without fail and all of a sudden it quit. I quized her and could find no reason for the change.

Device Manager shows Network Adapters (wired and wireless) to be "working properly".

Wireless actually works good.

Wired does not work, on a known good wire connection.

"Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet"

I tried to install latest driver, it claimed I had a newer version installed. I wonder how that could be, cuz I just downloaded the latest one from Dell.

I can't believe there is not more help/info available from Dell, but here I am, hoping someone can help.

Thanks,

Robin

Have you tried bypassing the router and connecting directly to the modem?  It may be a problem in the router and not a problem with the PC.

Actually, power off the PC, disconnect the router from the modem, recycle the modem so it will resync.  After the mode resync's, connect the laptop directly to the modem with the eithernet cable then power on the modem and let it boot up.  If this works, the problem is in the router, whether a bad port or whether it needs reloaded or even if it failed.  I had a wireless router fail where the wired connection would not connect to the internet, replaced the router and fixed the problem.

There may not be a lot of troubleshooting from Dell for connection problems like this as they can't write up troubleshooting for the many different hardware routers and modems that are available - they are not responsible for troubleshooting router/modem problems.

If what I suggest doesn't help, there is a Networking/Internet/Wireless forum section, repost there.

Is there a link light on the system, and on the router/swtich/wall port where the system is plugged in?

Thanks for reply. I brought the laptop to my home to work on it. I took the ethernet cable from a desktop unit that was working on the net fine, plugged it into the

laptop and tried what I could to get it running to no avail. I took the cable out of the laptop and plugged it back into the desktop and it worked fine.

I guess I missed the  Networking/Internet/Wireless forum section , I'll try there.

Thanks.
