Studio 1558 fan problem

Hello everybody,

Just got my brand new studio 15 on friday, turned it on after about 15 mins of light surfing the system overheated, restarted and everything worked fine. Dell said this is a known issue with no fix. This happens about once a day. Contacted dell tech support they updated the bios and said that would fix the problem. Long story short it didn't. Tech support is suppost to call me back today for a system exchange, my question is what kind of system will i get, I paid almost $1300 for my current system, which i've had less then a week, and i don't want to agree to a system exchange if they're gonna send me a $500 inspirion system. So will they send me something comparable to what i purchased or do i just need to opt for a refund and try a different system?

Go download OCCT and let it run

OCCT doens't work on Windows 7, which is waht shipped with almost every 1558

Grab the zip version and extract it to your desktop or somewhere that you have write permissions without having to elevate permissions. I can run OCCT just fine on both of my laptops and my desktop which are all on Windows 7 64bit. The version I am using is 3.1.0, so either you have an old version or sometimes the installer version won't work because of the Program Files permissions in Windows 7.

I was able to download the Bios A04 this morning.  I did it straight from the internet, downloaded, opened exe and flashed the new BIOS.  not a problem.  Now I'll need a few days to see if it actually worked since this is my home computer.

Dell Support installed BIOS A04 for me.  Now, so far it does not over-heat and shut down.  However, there is still a problem:  even when the computer is just sitting there idle (all programs closed), and the CPU usage is only 1-2%, every minute or so the fan rotates at high speed for about 10 seconds, and then returns back to the low speed.  This is quite annoying!!  It does this when the temperature (as reported by Real Temp) is about 40-45 degrees Celsius.

It seems like the temperature-fan control is too sensitive.  They should only turn the fan on at the high speed when the CPU usage is higher and the temperature is higher.  Or, the CPU idle temperature is too high due to poor heat dissipation.  This problem existed before the BIOS A04 update too, and it seems like it still hasn't been fixed.  Anyone have the same problem?  Is there going to be another BIOS update soon?

i wish i would of read this msg board before i ordered my soon to be delivered i5 1558, but i did order the ATI 4570 card, so hopefully it will not be an issue.  I will definetely be more careful next time.  I am still looking forward to receiving a [hopefully] bug free laptop...

I got OCCT working on the laptop, and its true also about prime95, it will shutdown your computer very fast!. I downloaded the Bios update and so far, no more shutdowns. Thanks to everyone in this thread for the info, but anyways i will return my laptop, its ridiculous that Dell released a computer with that issue and the only way they are learning is by loosing money, so I will help that cause :D

I wish I had found this thread before I ordered mine!  I got my Studio 1558 in late February, and the first time it shut down was during the initial setup.  It was consistently running without the fan for about 35 - 45 minutes before it would shut down.  Turn it back on, fan would come on, everything was fine until the next day.  I persisted a few days before calling Dell, then I found this thread and called tech support.  They first denied that it was a known issue, then acknowledged it at the end of the call and said that they were awaiting a solution from their engineering team, could they call me back in 3 days?  Sure.  They called back 4 days later to "see how it was going" rather than to offer a solution, so I decided I was done.  I had zero interest in a replacement, or in having a tech come out to me and rebuild the thing in my living room.  Maybe they were waiting for the bios update that some others have mentioned, but this was already on March 6th, and they didn't have anything to offer me.  They didn't balk when I asked for a refund, though it did take me 3 more calls to customer service before I finally got the return shipping label and a valid confirmation number.

I just got my Sony Vaio E-series yesterday, AND Sony upgraded my hard drive for free - couldn't be happier with it!

BIOS A04 appears to be working (so far).

2 different Dell people called me earlier today to let me know my replacement laptop was just shipped FedEx overnight, and provided with the tracking number. I looked up the tracking number, and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

Dell spent weeks stalling on this replacement, probably in hopes of A04 fixing my problem. Then, AFTER A04 fixed it, they shipped a replacement. It's amazing what threat of litigation can do. When I emailed support links to references about how to proceed with a small claims case, they changed their tone, and I got a tracking number the next day.

Hi everyone,

First, here's the Executive Summary in case you don't want to wade through the details:  Studio 15 new out of the box,  sudden shutdown once per day, every day.  Long story short: new hard drive and new Bio's (A04) seems to have cured problem.

This is my first posting and I hope my experience with my new Studio 15 (1558) will help others.  It started out problematic, but so far I have a happy ending.  This is my 4th Dell-made computer and I have been generally very satisfied over the years even though I have had some trouble with this new laptop.  I have a desktop and laptop from 2003 with WinXP, an Inspiron 1720 with Vista from 2008 and now a Studio 15 from Feb 2010.  The Studio 15 has the i3-330, 4GB ram, 320 GB 7200 SATA HD and runs with Windows 7 and MS Office 2007 Student ed., plus the other usual things.  The day after opening the box and using it, it did the sudden shut down, where it just turned-off with no notice.  Upon pressing the power button, it booted-up fine and ran fine thereafter for the rest of the day.  Next day, 1 sudden shutdown, reboot fine, works fine rest of day.  And so it went for about 10 days, after which I went to the Dell Chat support and worked with a technician.

The Dell technician believed that the problem was likely due to the hard drive.  I allowed the tech to connect to my laptop and he proceeded to clean and re-format the HD, then he had me reload my Win7 software.  Additionally he deleted a bunch of start-up programs.  After that, the problem seemed to have been solved.  I didn't experience another sudden shutdown issue until about 10 days later.  However, this time I only got one shutdown, then the laptop would not boot up after the shutdown.  Upon pressing the power button, it would ask me which mode to boot up and no matter which mode I selected of the two choices, I would get a blank screen with no icons (just the mouse arrow).  I tried booting up 4 times and the 4th time netted me a hard drive warning:  "SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0....A failure may be imminent."  So, I went to the Dell Chat support on my trusty 1720 and related my circumstances.  After a few lines of chat with the tech about what occured, he said he was sending me a new hard drive to install which would be preloaded with Win7 and other software that I had purchased.

The HD arrived very fast and took litterally 5 minutes to install.  The laptop booted and loaded all the appropirate software, turned itself off and on and after about 45 minutes was up and running.  I then went to the Dell Drivers/Uploads site and downloaded everything there, which included the latest Bios A04.  So far, it seemed to have worked.  I installed the new HD on 3/17/10 and today, 3/22, it has continued to work perfectly and my kids use the heck out of it for homework, Facebook and some game called Spore (?).  I will feel more confident after a month or so, but I'm hoping this has been the cure.

I have noticed that there seems to be two schools of thought as to the root problem:  over-heating and hard drive.  On the overheating, I'm not sure if this is the cause, although since I do not have any software that monitors temps, temperature doesn't appear to be a problem.  Everytime that the sudden shut down occured, I herd the fan in the background most of the time and I even put my hand on the bottom to check for heat.  Never was the bottom more than slightly warm to the touch.  My house temp being here in WA state stays a constant 67 to 69 degrees F, so unless the processor can get too hot without generating heat that can be felt by my hand, temp may not be an issue.  However, since I have both a new HD and the new Bio's A04, I can't be sure what cured what, especially since there apparently are some fan/temp control changes associated with the newer Bios software.  Since the laptop is only a month old now and under warantee for a year, I have time to see if more action is needed.  It was very helpful to me to see the experiences of others on this topic/laptop.  Thanx....Richard

I am in complete agreement that, the seperate graphics card is the way to go on this machine (Studio 1558).  While i think it was a BIOS issue, the ATI 4570 along with the HD 1080P, screen are incredible, way better than what i expected considering all the posts on this issue.  I have yet to put any kind of load on the system but so far no problems, very happy.

I highly recommend a n-router and n-wireless card too.  If you are wireless it makes a huge difference over G.
