CPU Fan Failure on Dell Inspiron 530 system

I am getting a CPU fan Failure on my  Dell Inspiron 530 system running the Windows Vista Home operating system.  It shuts down in about a minute of turning on so I can't retrieve any of my files.

I sent a email to the tech department and got the following advice

"As a basic  troubleshooting step, I will request you to reseat CPU fan cable and check if this issue is resolved after performing this step."

Does anyone know how to reseat the CPU fan cable? Does that just mean unplug and plug in again? I look through the manual and didn't see the cpu fan identified. How do I identify the correct one.

I am in looking to get a new machine but really need to get the data off the existing machine.

You only have two fans in your case.  The case fan in the back that exhausts heat and the fan sitting on your CPU heatsink.  They both look the same.  There are some wires coming off the CPU fan that plug into your motherboard.  It may have a clip holding it in the connector, but just press it to release it and then plug it back in.  The CPU can overheat very quickly without the fan running to cool it so you certainly don't want to run your computer without it working.  If you need to replace the fan, you can buy them online for only around $15.  You will need to get an original Dell replacement fan as using other retail fans will cause an error when you boot the computer.  HERE is a fan and heatsink.  You would just have to remove the fan from the heatsink or you can check with Dell parts to see how much they cost.

After reseating the fan cable, keep your case open and turn it on so you can actually see if the fan is working or not even though your safety instructions will warn you not to operate the computer with the cover off.  Follow your other safely instructions to prevent electrical shock or any static electricity, however.  If it is working, then shut it down and replace the cover.  These connectors hardly ever come loose so I doubt this is going to fix your problem.

Here is your board, but it may be slightly different depending on which 530 version you have like a, b, c or d.  Your CPU fan connects to number 2 which is right next to your processor.

Generic CPU fans will work, but the Dell heat-sink fastens down with screws rather than the plastic push-pins of standard Intel 775 units.

To adapt one of the latter to a Dell chassis, remove the push-pins and fasten it into place with aftermarket screws with spring dampeners like those sold with the Thermalright 775 Bolt-thru kit. I used this technique to retrofit my 540s and 220s (both of which were bought on eBay in minus CPUs and heatsinks) with Rosewill 92mm's.
