PE2950 hangs at 1st Blue Screen for Windows setup

I have a PE2950 that I am trying to install Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) Enterprise R2/SP2. It has 16GB of RAM, 3 146GB SAS drives set up as Raid 5. I am using the Dell 5.5 Server Assistant/Open Manage CD for initial setup.

After Dell OpenManage finishes, which includes the Windows CD and the system reboots, it hangs at the very beginning of the initial Windows setup (blue screen).

I have swapped CPUs and Memory plus rebulit the RAID a few times to include moving the drives around.

The interesting thing about this is I have built an identical server (a few hrs prior) with the same exact CDs with no issue.

First thing to try, if you have a DRAC card in the system, disable the virtual media. I highly suggest you use the dell 6.2 dvd to install the OS, it would have updated drivers and updated openmanage.

Download the two ISO file segments to a new, empty folder and concatenate them. Create a single DVD image file using the following commands:
Windows: copy /b OM* OM_620_SMTD_A00.iso
Linux: cat OM* > OM_620_SMTD_A00.iso

Thanks for the reply.

Make sure you have both ISO images for SBUU 6.2:- Have the latest disks from a new server purchase

Make sure you are using Windows media with Service Pack 2. :- Check Using Windows 2003 X64 r2 SP2

Are you using VL media downloaded from Microsoft?:- Valid media from the MS download site

Rebuilding 2 servers.. identical server bios firmware etc... One built without issue the other fails :(

Couple of things:

  • Make sure you have both ISO images for SBUU 6.2.
  • Make sure you are using the copy /b command to merge the two into a single ISO.
  • Make sure you are using Windows media with Service Pack 2.
  • Are you using VL media downloaded from Microsoft?
