Studio & XPS Users experiencing video lockups and freezes / Throttling issues

If you have questions regarding 130 watt power adapters, please refer to the thread below:
Attention Studio XPS 1645/47 and Studio 1747 owners

For all others, I am not an engineer so if you have something you would like to see added to this initial post, please PM me and I will add it.

Since rumors are that there are different motherboard revisions, please download the 64bit version of CPU-Z here.

In the Mainboard tab, please tell us your Model # and BIOS revision as well as the model of laptop you are using.  Please make sure you are running the latest drivers.

So again, please provide:
Model of laptop
BIOS Revision number
Board Model
Power supply (130w/90w)
If you are running non-Dell-approved drivers, please tell us what version(s) you are using of those as well.

After you have put this in the header of your response, please state what issues you are still having with:
Throttling
System lock-ups
Performance between battery and AC adaptor plugged in
Playing HD streams
USB power
Sleep or hibernate issues
Fan constantly running at high speeds
The engineers and developers are (from what I can tell) doing a pretty decent job of trying to find a cure for all of the issues so let's try and make this as concise as possible for them to make things go faster :)

I believe the X-Fi exemplifies or uses the defective portion of the PC and makes it crash. If you remove it, and you have no crash, it does not mean you repaired the PC. I too was hopeful, but I had 2 crashes since I removed the SoundBlaster X-Fi software. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Hi all, just thought ill contribute.

Received my new Studio XPS 1645 on March 24 and I have experienced one crash per day so far.  Random crashes, a couple of times right after log in screen, another time coming out of sleep another time while browsing the web and another time while watching youtube videos.  It's done it like once a day.

Processor: i7 720qm

Ram: 8gb

Bios: A08 came pre installed by Dell.

Latest Flash installed

Haven't updated the video drivers yes as when I tried, after installation I couldn't open ccc anymore so I just rolled back.

90w power adapter

Just order the 130w power adapter to see if that helps, if not i'll try uninstalling the sound blaster driver, I'll keep you posted.

Quick recap - Bios A08,Windows 7 -64bit, SB-XFI uninstalled, Flash Beta installed, new ATI mobility drivers just installed, now can not play ANY youtube videos, not just the HD videos. This is a step backwards for me, before youtube videos usually played, only HD videos were consistently problematic.

Attempting to disable flash hardware acceleration also causes it to hang.

Make sure you have the correct ATI driver and CCC installed. I had an issue with this on mine yesterday. Also, uninstall all ATI drivers from Programs and Features, reboot to Safe Mode, and run Driver Sweeper to remove all the ATI drivers from your system before installing the new drivers.

I had trouble with the drivers from game.amd.com.

Since uninstalling the SB software I have flash hardware acceleration enabled. So far (knock on wood) everything is running fine with no problems.

I am going on a week freeze free! I do not have any issues with Youtube and 1080 videos. Reloaded Factory OS Image, installed new ATI drivers with power play disabled, installed Flash Beta with hardware acceleration enabled, A08 with 130W brick, and uninstalled SB X-fi. Freeze free for one week, still crossing fingers!

Where Do I download the CCC?

I have problem with Unistall the ATI drivers

What is "Driver Sweeper"? How to run this?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Got the driver sweeper from internet. The ATI uninstall left a lot of junk files around that cause problem for my re-install. I clean the ATI junk files now.

I wish ATI would make it easier to uninstall their software but Driver Sweeper does a good job. Did you find the link to the correct ATI drivers in my previous post? It includes CCC.

Thanks.  Yes, I downloaded the drivers and CCC from the link provided.

Here is what I have done:

1.  Update ATI Driver to - 8.712

2. Update Flash

3. Remove SB Software

After the above,  I am still able to simulate the freeze/lock-up at will.    Here is my test cases:

  • Startup PowerPlay to play an HD movie in full screen in the background
  • Launch Vmware with Linux client to perform some I/O using gzip (compression utility)
  • Launch Windows extract to extra some files in background
  • Open Internet Explorer ro browse the internet (light weigth site like google mail)
  • The CPU and memory utilization are at less than 50%
  • The mouse and keep board freeze up like crazy

I have yet to try the following:

Re-install the OS

Replace the Power bar to 130W (in shipment now)

As a customer, we can  simulate the problem at will.  I don't understand how and what Dell Support/Engineering are doing?   If they do not have a solution for this problem, why are they even shipping the laptop to the customers?  I received mine on March 24th, 2010.  This problem was well known before then.  I notice that a few others continue to receive this mul-funtioning laptop....

I will wait for the PowerBar replacement, then re-installl the OS.  If it still doesn't work, I willl ship the laptop back to Dell.

Early February XPS 1645 arrived.

Zero problems- until trying to run streaming video in full screen mode from sites like Hulu, Youtube etc.

Did a new install of Win 7 and same results. No problems until running streaming video in full screen mode.

- Studio XPS 1645

-ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670- driver 8.632.1.2000

-BIOS A08

-90 Watt/ 130 has been ordered

-Adobe flash 10.0.45.2

-Motherboard OY517R

Putting a clean install of Win7 made no difference when viewing streaming video in full screen mode. Simply cannot get through a full screen video without one of these results---The screen going grey with sound continuing to play followed by lock up. Screen breaking into pixels followed by lock up.

I see some suggestions I have yet to try, but for now I'll just put my experiences out and hope it helps.

Todd: Can you update your post. Are you confident in a fix or is it the fact that the fix seems to work for some and not for others? Also, can tech support make the changes? I'm not confident in my ability to uninstall and reinstall drivers. My screen freeze ups are random but when they happen it is always at the same time as an outlook new email message alert. Heat seems to be an issue because the system will work fine for hours but once I get the first freeze up it is often followed by several more over the next few hours.

okay, I may have a new problem. a very unfriendly one.

since I've upgraded to A08, my internet connection via wifi is HYPRA slow. the wifi card connects to the modem at 1Mbit altough it was at 50Mbits before. I cannot login into gmail, it's too slow.

And if I try to enter dell wifi configuration tool : "internal configuration inconsistency".

I have off course changed not much to my configuration :
 - windows update
 - ati CCC 10.3 (with a system restore before, because it would not boot with no Ati ccc and the gpu watcher 7 widget loaded at boot) ...

please :'( people, tell me you have a solution :'(.

I'm sick of the 1747 problems now...

edit : no need to say, that there is NO LINK to the wifi driver for 7-x64 for the 1747. However, I've seen a new driver for vista-64, 'll try it tonight see if it helps.

Delete and recreate the wireless connection. If that does not fix it, go to Control Panel (If in category view, click Network and Internet) -> Click Internet Options -> Click Advanced Tab -> Click on Reset.. to Reset Internet Explorer settings.

Let us know how it goes. Good Luck!

FYI, I just had a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Bluescreen! So much for my stable week streak.

Is there going to be an update to fix the intermittent fan on high speed problem?
