Studio & XPS Users experiencing video lockups and freezes / Throttling issues

If you have questions regarding 130 watt power adapters, please refer to the thread below:
Attention Studio XPS 1645/47 and Studio 1747 owners

For all others, I am not an engineer so if you have something you would like to see added to this initial post, please PM me and I will add it.

Since rumors are that there are different motherboard revisions, please download the 64bit version of CPU-Z here.

In the Mainboard tab, please tell us your Model # and BIOS revision as well as the model of laptop you are using.  Please make sure you are running the latest drivers.

So again, please provide:
Model of laptop
BIOS Revision number
Board Model
Power supply (130w/90w)
If you are running non-Dell-approved drivers, please tell us what version(s) you are using of those as well.

After you have put this in the header of your response, please state what issues you are still having with:
Throttling
System lock-ups
Performance between battery and AC adaptor plugged in
Playing HD streams
USB power
Sleep or hibernate issues
Fan constantly running at high speeds
The engineers and developers are (from what I can tell) doing a pretty decent job of trying to find a cure for all of the issues so let's try and make this as concise as possible for them to make things go faster :)

>Update your Dell System Software to version A05 or newer.

Downloaded that, and when installing it asks you to install 64-bit version. I try to search it, gives

"We are unable to process your request at this time. Please try again in a few minutes. If this problem persists, please call 1-800-WWW-DELL."

fails after fails.....

What's CPU-Z? I just like to know what I'm downloading. And oh yeah, the link does not work....

Model of laptop: Dell Studio 1747

BIOS version: A14

Board Model: It says Motherboard Name Dell Studio 1747...

Power supply: I got the replacement thicker one. It does not say it in the power supply.

Issues are that if I look at image files the screen often goes black and you have to wait for couple of minutes for it to return back. Sometimes you need to reboot. After trying all kinds of things suggested my laptop's screen started to go black when I watch videos.

I'm too scared and annoyed to use my Dell 1747, so I just bought a new Asus so I can come here to see if there's a solution... no answer in 2 weeks. No more Dell that's for sure.

Dude, the issues you are facing should be addressed to the technical support directly. It makes no sense posting them in this forum because they are not common for all Studio 1747 owners. I have the same model but never experienced them. So next time just try that ;)

Hi everyone.  It may be a bit late, but I believe I have a solution that hopefully still helps some people out.  I had this problem last year with my Studio 1747.  Sometimes when watching HD videos (both streaming and on the harddrive), the program I was watching it in would crash.  I even had the blue screen a few times when attempting to watch these videos in full screen mode.  Naturally, Dell support had no answers for me.  But I was eventually able to fix my problem (and hopefully yours!)

SOLUTION:  Turn off hardware acceleration!  The moment I did this, I have never had a problem again for about a year, after over 10 crashes in the first few days.

To turn off hardware acceleration (Windows 7), do the following:

1. Choose Start > Control Panel.

2. Double click Personalization and select Display Settings.

3. Click Advanced Settings.

4. Click Change Settings on the Troubleshooting tab.

5. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.

6. Click Apply and then click OK to accept the new setting and close the dialog box.

7. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

8. Restart Windows.

Viola! I hope it helps! If not, it is most likely a different problem than I had, and I wish you luck in solving it.

You can also try updating your video driver through the graphics maker.

Hello guys!

I have been bought and used Dell 1640 since 2009 within CPU P8700, 320Gb Hard drive, 4Gb Ram3, VGA HD3670. From the first time, I did notice about my power supply overheated but I don't think It is a big deal then ignore.

I bought this laptop at Vietnam and now I am in Finland. The warranty is expired on March 2011.

Some info of my power supply:

Model : FA90PE1-00
Input : 100-240V- 50-80Hz 1.5A
Output : 19.5V 4.62A
Maxima output power : 90W

And then, I updated the Bios from A14 to A15 and some trouble happened.

_I really feel that my Laptop not working really well, especially when playing some games within requirement of medium or high computer/laptop performance.

_During 20-minutes-playing-game, the power supply is auto turn-off due to overheating. Then I have to remove the cable of power supply and plug it in again.

_When the Bios already updated to A15, my laptop is getting hotter than the previous version A14.

_I updated every drivers of Dell 1640 to the latest version.

What can I do to solve this problem?!?Contact Dell support to get the other power supply fit my laptop OR buy a new power supply?!?Which one I  will be able to buy 90W or 130W?

Sincerely yours

i had almost the same problem but Dell send me a letter that it could be fixed by replacing the 90w power supply for a  130w. They do this for free if u own the 1640 models. So go ahead and contact them.

Greetings.

Hello,

I ve a studio 1557, and wat i cant understand is that why is this charger upgrade being given only to studio 1747 and xps 1645 users even though we have the same processor facing the same issues such as throttling.

I have updated my bios and drivers and am still facing throttling issues, any suggestion wat i should do? My laptop is still under warranty. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello!

To me, I have Studio XPS 1640 and also the overheating problem. Then, I chatted with Dell Technical support to get the exactly answer for my situation. I also asked them sending me the other replacing adapter for my laptop and It seem not possible for me because I am in Europe not US and I have to buy the new adapter from local Dell shop. Finally, I had bought a new adapter within 130W instead of 90W and it has been working stable.

For your situation, I strongly recommend that you chat directly with Dell technical support or else, you can contact me for some advice.

First of all I would like to thank Dell for all the work they have put in to fixing problems with these models of laptop.

I have a Dell Studio 1747 and are still experiencing issues.

Issue 1.

I seem to be having a screen flickering issue. This happens across the board during the operation of windows 7, including gaming.

Issue 2.

Across a large range of games I seem to be experiencing FPS lockups/ stuttering, and yes this happens even when the game is operating above 30FPS . Don't know if this is related to Bios A14, the 130Watt adapter, the throttling issues of the CPU and GPU, A voltage or wattage problem. Could be all

Issue 3.

Voice synchronization seems to be out of sync with lip movements on many games. Might be an outdated sound driver issue.

Please Dell, me and thousands of other customers are begging you to keep on top of these problems until they are resolved. If I am missing anything, please just ask. Here is a technical printout of my system.
