Studio XPS 1640 using Windows 7 64 Bit and Cyberlink Power DVD DX 8.3 - Problems with video playback.

When I try to play DVD's and Blu-Ray disks with my Studio XPS 1640, the playback is VERY choppy.  I'm running Windows 7 64 Bit and Cyberlink Power DVD DX 8.3.  I have the Panasonic Blu-Ray 12.7mm slot load drive that burns and plays Blu-Rays.

At one point, this worked a lot better, I don't think it was choppy at all.  I can't remember if that was when I was running Windows Vista 64 Bit before I upgraded to Windows 7, or not.

When the movies are choppy, the Panasonic drive is making this very weird noise like its skipping all over the DVD or Blu-Ray disk constantly trying to read the disk but not able to read the disk.  The drive seems to be fine for burning and other tasks.

If I copy the DVD to the hard drive, the movie plays great.

If I play the DVD with Windows Media Player, the movie also appears to play great.

This may be a problem with the Cyberlink Power DVD DX 8.3 software.

I did everything I can think of:

I updated the Power DVD DX to the latest version.

I updated all the drivers.

I flashed the bios to the latest bios.

I flashed the firmware in the Panasonic Drive to the latest firmware.

Again, this appears to be a problem with the Power DVD DX software, or a problem with how the Power DVD DX software interacts with the Windows 7.

Does anyone know if this is a known problem and any fixes?

I can play DVD's with Windows Media Player, but I would have to buy other software to play Blu-Rays, and Dell's included software should work in theory without having to buy new software!!!

Thank You,

L.

I think it's the Power DVD software.

When I play DVD's with the Roxio Creator 2009 Cineplayer, it works flawlessly.

I heard other people having the same problem and upset with Dell that they don't get the problem fixed with the Power DVD software or provide Roxio or other software to play DVD's and Blu-Rays.

A lot of the people I read about were upset because they did not want to have to pay more money out of their pocket for software to play Blu-Rays.

This is a known issue.

PLEASE HELP DELL!!!

Well, it's been a long road with this issue, but it seems to finally be fixed.  I read online that the problem was a conflict Dell Datasafe local backup that causes Power DVD to be choppy.  I was reluctant all these months to uninstall DDSLB because there is no place I no of the download the latest version of it, and Dell seems unwilling to supply it.  I've also been getting periodic errors that DDSLB will not update.  So I decided to take 6 screenshots of all the different pages that come up for DDSLB and then uninstall it.  After doing that, DVD and Blu-Ray playback on the Power DVD started working perfectly!  This appears to be in large part because the DDSLB version that came with my computer is not fully compatible with Windows 7.  Way to go Dell for not being able to tell me this, but at least it's finally fixed.  I have Power DVD 8, I also read Power DVD 9 may also fix this issue.  I got on this as definately a software cause because DVD's played right on Media Player and on Roxio Cineplayer.
