XPS 420 owners running Windows 7
I loaded Windows 7 Home 32bit. The only two devices I cannot load are the onboard Sigmatel 9227 Audio and some PCI Input Device. I think the PCI Input Device is the Teac CAB200 Media Card Reader. I downloaded the Vista 32 bit drivers for both of those. Loaded them as Admin under Vista Compatible Mode. Windows says no go.

Thanks Chris. Just two questions: Did you run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor, and if so, did it report a hardware incompatibility? Ok, three questions: Does Win 7 have a built-in driver for the sound adapter?

Yes. It said what I surmised in that the PCI Input Device (Media Card Reader) and the SigmaTel HD audio were not Windows 7 compatible. That is why I tried to load Vista32 and XP drivers in Compatibility Modes.
Win7 does not have a built in driver.
I know it can be done, I just have to find the right Vista32 or XP drivers.

I've installed both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 on my XPS 420 with no problems. The onboard audio shows up as "High Definition Audio Controller" in the Device Manager, which I would assume is another name for the one that you've got, I suspect, unless Dell changed hardware mid-stream, which seems unlikely. There is a driver for it (it works *smile*, I'm listening to internet radio right now) , here's information on the 64-bit OS version:
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/13/2009
Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Since this driver is from Microsoft, I really don't understand why the Windows 7 installation didn't find and install it, like it did for me. As for the media card reader, it seems to be fine, too. Everything is working just fine. Did you try going to Windows Update to look for these?

Thanks Chris. I was wondering as I was contemplating going to Win 7 myself, and my 410 has a Sigmatel audio. The upgrade advisor doesn't flag mine as a problem, so I'm wondering if it is because it is an earlier version that is supported. It will be a while before I find out, however, as Win XP is still doing a very acceptable job and I'm reluctant to scrap it.
