Dell Inspiron 530s, Windows Vista, 2 years 7 months old, Refusing to start up, 4 beeps

Hello,

I am having a problem with my Dell PC which I hope someone can help with. It is an Inspiron 530s that I purchased in Feb 2008. The first thing that happened was I turned it on as normal and it worked fine, however after leaving it on and going off to do something else when I returned, Windows was not on and the computer was constantly beeping. I turned it off and turned it back on again and it just beeped constantly. I left it for a couple of hours and turned it on again but it failed, eventually after a few tries to boot it up and using safe mode, it worked again and I could use it no problem. However as the days went on the computer became more unstable and I started to receive blue screen error messages which I haven't received before. In addition it would take several attempts to start up the computer, when I turned it on, it refused to boot up, all I would get are four beeps. Again eventually it would finally go into Windows. Recently, the problem has gotten worse- the computer will refuse to load Windows now no matter how many times I turn it on. All it does is makes four beep sounds. They go like this beep-beep-beep-beep. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

According to your on-line User's Manual, this indicates a problem with the memory.  Assuming that you have never added or otherwise made a change to memory, it may just be a connection problem.  You can try opening the case and re-seating the memory.  To do this, note that each memory module has two latches, one at each end, with small tabs.  Push on the tabs to extract the memory from its connector, then, using a thumb at each end of the module, firmly push the module back into the connector.  EDIT - Note that the latches should move back and snap into place as you push the module back into the connector.  If the problem was a bad connection this action should help.  If you do not notice a change in the symptoms, you may have a bad memory module.

Additional information can be found in your User's Manual, located here:  Inspiron 530s User's Manual.
