Dimension 5150 Audio Speaker Problems

I recently had my hard drive crash. Installed new hard drive, xp, and office 10 again...ugh! When I plugged everything back in my speakers did not work. They are the style that have the green jack that plugs into the green port-even i can figure that out but when I go to adjust sound its like the computer doesnt see them??? Any ideas???

Hi Kahunatom,

Check device manager and make sure your audio adapter device driver is properly installed. If you see any question marks, let me know.

I have an E510 which is identical to the 5150.

When you did the reinstall there is a required install sequence.  It is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Desktop System Software (3) Install Intel motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install Device Drivers including Video, Dell sound drivers, ethernet, etc.

We find a lot of install problems are because the motherboard chipset drivers have not been installed.  They must be installed BEFORE installing device driver such as the sound.  If this is the case, install the Intel chipset drivers, restart the PC and then install the Dell SigmaTel sound drivers (if you have the standard integrated audio) and any other missing devcie driver.  In most cases this will fix the missing install problems but in a few cases it will take a new/correct install sequence to get everything working.
