Dell Vostro 200 Won't turn on
I have a Vostro 200, working fairly well, however I had to unplug it to move some furniture and when I plugged it back in the power button does nothing. There is power to the unit as the green light on the power supply is lit green, I tried unplugging again for a while and plugging back in but although the green light shows up, the power button does nothing, I have opened it and checked connectors, nothing is loose, and the motherboard shows an orange light so it is getting power...I am at a loss. Please Help
Note: I had this problem one time before but when I came back the next day and pushed the power button it turned right on with no repeat of the problem until now 5 months later

Hi Kiwi Cone,
Unplug the PC, then hold the power button for a few seconds. Then plug it back in and see if it will start up.

First try opening the case, disconnect and reconnect all the power and data cables to the motherboard and drives, disconnect all the peripherial devices, except the keyboard, mouse and monitor and see if this makes a difference.
No difference, try the following, if you are comfortable working around computers:
Note: The only 100% method of testing a PSU, is to install a known working power supply.
Unplug the cord from the power supply, hold the power button in for about 15/20 seconds, open the case, unplug the 24-pin power connector from the motherboard and jump the Green wire to one of the Black wires, reconnect the power cord and power the system on, if power supply and case fans and the hard drive run, then the PSU should be good.
Note: Do not remove any wires from the plug, use a small piece of wire or a paper clip as a jumper.
Power supply checks out and the system still does not work, again remove the power cord, hold the power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power, reconnect the 24-pin connector to the motherboard.
Remove all the PCI cards, the video card [if applicable], memory, all peripherals, disconnect the data and power cables to all the drives, check that the front panel cable is connected to motherboard, with nothing else connected to the system, reconnect the power cable and power the system on.
If you do not get any beep codes and/or there is difference in the LED indication of the power button, it would appear that the motherboard has died, or maybe the processor.
Note the processor rarely fails.

As I've posted many times, the best method to check the power supply is to try installing a *know working* unit.

Check the reading of the power button LED, is it Steady Blue, Blinking Blue, Steady Amber, Blinking Amber or is it Off?
Are there any 'Beeps', or error messages, if there are, please post the exact text of the message?

The power button light is totally off. I tried running it directly to an outlet, but it yields the same response, I know the unit is getting power as the steady green light for the power supply is on and there is an amber light on the motherboard and this is the same if it is plugged directly or into the power strip.

Oh, yes and there are no beeps or messages.

The light for the power button is off totally. There is the amber light on the motherboard lit, and the steady green of the power supply, but its just like the power button is not hooked up, it does nothing.

The LED on the motherboard is the 'Stand By Power Light' [aka 'flea power'] and indicates the motherboard has 'some' power is reaching it, not an indication that the power supply has not failed.

Thank you Shesagordie, I believe the Power Supply was the culprit, I took the one out of my gaming computer and the Dell fired right up. I went out and purchased one today, and had the Dell PSU tested, and it was one bar out of six on strength.

Hi Kiwi,
I am facing the problem right now.I did all the tips provided on the above thread .Still i cant see my battery light with any status.
Pls help as my data is very important on this pc.

It was my Husbands business computer so i was panicking. I bought a new power supply, pulled the one out of his, Silver box inside the top of the computer, sorry it would not let me upload a picture. You can probably call a local pc store, but call around, I spent about 32.00 for mine, you can see wattage etc on yours when you look at it, dont be talked into spending too much. :-) Its really easy to take out, just remember what was plugged in...etc.

my note book is vostro 3350,pls help me.I faced the same problem as in the above thread.It was working absolutely fine yesterday.But today morning suddenly not switching on.

As you have a Vostro 3350 laptop and not a Vostro 200 desktop, you need to post this in the Laptop forum HERE, as this forum is for Desktop Hardware.
Also, please include the version of windows that's installed and a discription of the issue.

I have just had this issue on 4 Dell Vostro 230 running WIndows 7 Pro. Dell came and replaced the motherboard and system worked for 1 day then the same issue. Seems the BIOS is stuck in a loop.
I have resolved the issue on all 4 systems by:
1. Powering off the system, pull the power cable out and hold the power button for a few seconds to get rid of the residual charge on the board.
2. Remove the CMOS battery and then power on the PC and wait for the beep sequence.
3. Then power power off the PC and replace the battery.
4. Power on and the system should post.
Not sure if this is related to faulty or old CMOS batteries but Im going to replace them anyway.
