New Processors for Dell Optiplex 745?
Hi, I have a Dell Optiplex 745 mini desktop and was looking to upgrade my Processor.
What options are present for myself? I was hoping to be able to upgrade to an Intel Core i5.
The motherboard specs are as followed:
Board: Dell Inc. 0GX297
Serial Number: CN6986174I20AF.
Bus Clock: 800 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Inc. 2.2.0 03/29/2007

Yes, you can use Core 2 Quad Q6600 or Q6700. You cannot use Q8xxx/Q9xxx.
Also, the fastest supported non-Extreme dual core is Core 2 Duo E6700.

Also, on the link you provided it says
"Microprocessor type:
Intel® Pentium® 4, Pentium® D, Celeron®, or Core™ processor"
Doesn't that mean it can use Core processors?

The 745 has a Q965 chipset, which means it's a socket 775. I don't know what the max is, but you cannot put a Core i5 in this system. The specs for the 745 (tower) are readable here. <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

The original Core processors, yes, but not the new Core processors (very different socket and completely incompatible).
The 745 can run Core2 processors like the E6300 (65nm) and such.

So, would a Core 2 Quad processor be compatible, then? If so, I'll just get one of those.

Which is better, the Core 2 Quad Q6700 or the Core 2 Duo E6700? I'm guessing the Quad Core.
If you can answer this, than I think that I'm all set, thank you.

Like Bev mentioned, The Core 2 Quad Q6700 is better than the Core 2 Duo E6700.

Here this will show you the difference between the models.

Remember, the better the processor the more expensive.

Sorry about opening up an old thread, but I thought it best to do it here -- this thread started in 2011 and now there's new hardware out there,...
I too am wanting to upgrade my CPU. Also have a dell Optiplex 745 Tower, CPU: Intel Pentium D 945 3.4GHz, Sokect 775 LGA, Motherboard: 0HR330. If you need more info, please let me know.
So, are my options the same as this other party? Can I upgrade my CPU above a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 or? The referred to CPU's are pretty cheap these days.
Thanks for your time in advance!

1333mhz processors are not supported.
The INTEL 965 chipset does not list ANY quads as a possible upgrade.
Max Bios is Heiden 2.6.6 but I don't know if that is required.
In some cases it will prevent processor from working and no I'm not going to test each and every one.
Only Pentium D and Core2 Duo processors were tested.
Pentium D 960's are cheap now.
YOU CANNOT USE Core 2 QUAD 8000 or 9000 Series at all EVER.

Spent hours in here after posting trying to figure out if I could upgrade or not. Kind'a feel sorry for everyone trying to upgrade as it seems I'm not the only one on the same mission.
But Speedstep, I can't keep up with your posts? Earlier posts you said for a Optiplex 745 Tower, you can't upgrade beyond a Core Duo. Then later you said here in this thread we can upgrade - "Conroe/Allendale C2D or Kentsfield Quads only.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz BX80562Q6700
Lithography 65 nm"
Then you said here in this thread it might" work: "So Q6700 INTEL SLACQ might work but also might require the COPPER Performance Heatsink. Latest Bios HEIDEN_2.6.6.exe should be done BEFORE changing CPU."
Now you're sort'a back to saying it won't work? Remember, I'm not asking about 1333mhz processors. I have a 945 chipset (not 960), and I'm not asking you to test every processor, and if a Quad 8000 or higher doesn't work, no problem! :emotion-1: Just wanted to know what's the highest we Optiplex 745 Towers can go.
This thread here appears to confirm a Q6600 and Q6700 will work! So my question to you is, can I upgrade my 945 to a Q6600/Q6700 @ 1066mhz, 65nm, 95W-105W? Right now Ebay has these very cheap and if you know something I don't, I'd like to know as unless I hear otherwise from you, I plan on buying one or two to test with and eventually retain.
Thanks!

You are picking on a years old thread OP 10 years ago. years ago that was what was known.
65nm 1066fsb parts seem to work but are not validated.
8000 series is 45nm 1333mhz.
No guarantee. No validation. No warranty or fitness for a particular purpose.
