No audio device installed, Latitude E6420

Windows 7 x64

Latitude E6420

After loading Windows 7 on the E6420 and installing the audio driver from support.dell.com the audio devices show up in device manager as enabled, (IDT High Difinitin Audio CODEC and Intel Display Audio), they show up in the Playback tab of the Sound property in the control panel.  Where the issue is in the systray, the audio shows up with the red X and states the "Audio device is disabled".  After running the Windows 7 troubleshooter it attempts to enable the devices (though it shows up in Device Manager as enabled) but it states it fails to enable the device.  After some more troubleshooting I also get the error, "No speakers or headphones are plugged in"

Troubleshooting steps taken:

  • Installed latest drivers from support.dell.com
  • uninstalled audio driver and reinstalled (R297613)
  • uninstalled driver and let windows install a driver (got the same issue)

See the Windows 7 troubleshooter information below.

Thanks!

Did you install the System Software<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

as the 1st item after the operating system installation? If not try to do so now.

Both the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services must be running for audio to work correctly.

I would check these and make sure the Audio Service is running as the test says.

Thanks for the relpy!

It looks like during a hand build of the OS the driver windows grabs to install works correctly.  Unfortunately with an unattended install through the unatttend.xml the Audio driver doesn't seem to work even after an uninstall from the device manager adn installing system then the audio driver.  I also tried just installing the NIC driver in the unattend file and still ran into the issue.  I found about about an Nvidia driver that may cause issues, but that doesn't seem to be the issue here where I only install the NIC driver and windows still had an issue with audio.  I'll continue to troubleshoot, any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

I have been banging my head trying to find a resolution to this same issue for about a month now, and today I had an epiphany lol.

I was looking at it as an audio issue only, but that is not the cause of the issue. Because of the HDMI the audio and video work in tandem, let me explain. HDMI sends audio and video so the video card must embed the audio onto the signal. So I did a quick search to see what video card I had, Intel, then downloaded the latest video card driver from dell, then unzipped it, then went into folder and hit the setup.exe icon and bingo............... I have no more audio issues ;)
